Understanding Effective Communication Modes in Professional Settings

Introduction

A person in the current world has many different ways of communicating. The means of conveying information from one individual to another can range from personal meetings to text messages and video calls. Individuals must know which kind of communication will be more appropriate in specific contexts because some forms may be favorable or harmful in particular circumstances.

Video Communication Analysis

People may use communication techniques that are inappropriate for the task at hand. In the video by Stanford Graduate School of Business (2017), a viewer is presented with two examples of failed communication by Sarah. Firstly, Sarah texts her employer to say that she slept in and needs help with her presentation, leading to the employer being confused (Stanford Graduate School of Business, 2017). Instead, Sarah could have called him to tell him the needed information faster while also conveying an apologetic tone that would have been helpful in that situation.

Secondly, Sarah underwent a job interview via phone call, and after that, she was confused about her performance (Stanford Graduate School of Business, 2017). It would have been better for Sarah to meet in person to interpret the interviewer’s body language for context. Hence, while circumstances may drive people to use unfitting communication modes, adjusting them to meet the required goal is necessary.

For proper leadership, more personalized modes of communication may be beneficial. As was provided by the video, text messages are unprofessional in the corporate setting, with phone calls and physical meetings being better suited to provide context (Stanford Graduate School of Business, 2017). Hence, phone calls give subordinates a personal and fast way of communication. Personal meetings and presentations also allow the leader to establish authority and subordination through their interpersonal abilities. Thus, phone calls and personal meetings are modes of communication that are beneficial for leaders.

Conclusion

Hence, communication modes can prove advantageous or disadvantageous in different settings. For instance, a face-to-face meeting would be preferable for a job interview, while a phone call might better communicate with management. Moreover, leaders need to understand and use adequate modes of communication, with more personalized modes taking priority to establish authority. To summarize, a modern person must know the benefits and downsides of various communication modes for success.
