Unethical Behavior in Logistics Management: Consequences and a Christian Ethical Perspective

Introduction

In logistics management, situations that may give rise to ethical conflicts are quite common. The main problem was the likelihood of unethical behavior on the part of workers, which could undermine the organization’s values and cooperation. Based on my personal experience, as well as my reading of literature, I would like to address the topic of unethical behavior in logistics on this discussion board post, as well as a Christian view of the motivation of such behavior and the consequences for individuals and businesses.

Situation with Unethical Behavior and Consequences

First of all, I would like to elaborate on my own experience when I noticed unethical behavior in logistics. My uncle worked for a logistics company for a time and told me a story about how he witnessed a corrupt event that ultimately had a lasting impact on the company’s success over the years. The incident involved a director who manipulated the inventory records to meet his expectations for quarterly purposes.

In this case, an important role is played by organizational identity, which manifests itself in unethical organizational behavior (Gigol, 2021). Proof of such identification is the fact that enterprises with State property conduct corrupt work processes that ultimately identify the enterprise at its worst. So, in the situation with my uncle, the director’s behavior was motivated by his desire and the need to show the company’s profitability to the stakeholders, and the manager was willing to deceive to achieve the goal.

In my personal situation, the director wanted to create a false impression of the company’s positive results. The motives for such manipulation are the individual’s desire for professional growth and financial gain, which, in principle, are selfish reasons (Gan et al., 2019). By performing these actions and knowingly committing deception, the director could have benefited from bonuses and ensured quick, high-quality career growth. However, for stakeholders, such unethical behavior resulted in significant financial losses. For example, shareholders have suffered significantly from such actions, as they relied on accurate financial information to believe the reports and make their investment decisions.

In this scenario, the rights to transparent, correct, and accurate information were violated. Providing accurate statements is a crucial factor that enables stakeholders and the company to make informed business decisions. The consequences of such actions are not only short-term but represent long-term losses for the company and other parties (Gan et al., 2019). Such losses may include reputational damage to the company, reduced customer trust, financial losses, and legal consequences for lying. In addition, staff in such a situation cannot be sure they will be given job security, as the organization’s stability has become precarious.

Biblical View on Unethical Behavior

From a biblical point of view, the manifestation of unethical behavior is also discouraged, and confirmation of this can be found in the Bible. For example, it says that the so-called “wrong balance” is an abomination to the Masters (Bible Society International, 2001). This statement shows that it is essential for a person to respect honesty and decency in everyday life and all business relationships.

In keeping with this requirement, the person repeats the principles described by God, and in the case of an incident with logistics, they have been violated. In addition, biblical social justice is closely linked to ethical leadership, as fairness in administration is a manifestation of the pastoral perspective (Sanou, 2021). Thus, righteousness is as important in business as in interpersonal human relations.

From a pastoral point of view, Christian leaders who have at some point exhibited unethical behavior should ask for forgiveness from all to whom they have committed such a sin, and, before this, it is essential to acknowledge their transgression. In addition, the most critical elements for response and admission of guilt are the desire for compensation, honesty, and transparency (Marquardt et al., 2021). The Christian leaders are also the injured parties, so they must show forgiveness and grace.

A Christian leader, in carrying out his actions, must disregard whether he has engaged in unethical behavior or is a victim. The leader must recognize that they can embody the principles of prophetic leadership in their activities and lead their subjects on the right path (Kretzschmar, 2023). The main task of prophetic leaders is to uphold justice and tell the truth to both their subjects and authorities, while challenging the status quo in the situation. For logistics, the Christian leader scenario is actually prophetic leadership, which means that the individual should aim to expose unethical practices and promote concepts of accountability and transparency in the company’s operations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, in logistics, the person who manages all the processes in the company must consider the possibility of ethical problems at work. An example of such a problem is record manipulation, as my uncle’s case showed. To build a culture of righteous leadership, it is essential to understand the motives and consequences of such actions, as well as to consider Christian views on building a culture of leadership that emphasizes ethical behavior. The integration of biblical principles can be helpful in the fight against unethical behavior, as the principles laid down in the Bible can contribute to the creation of a righteous institutional environment where justice and fairness prevail.
