Company’s Mission and Vision Statements

The company’s mission is to serve the community as partners in the field of healthcare. There are two ways to fulfill this mission. The first way is to provide expert knowledge about health and self-healthcare (“Community benefit,” n.d.). The second one is to create an effective and progressive healthcare system that any person has access to. The steps to fulfill these tasks are providing health education in the community and making healthcare available for people who are considered to belong to vulnerable groups (“Community benefit,” n.d.). Another step is supporting and promoting activities that are focused on community building.

Company’s Core Values

The company has ten core values. The first one is anticipating the needs of the patients. Another part of this principle is treating people with compassion and generosity. The second one is supporting diversity and respecting the life and dignity of every person. The third one is making an effort to listen and understand people and assuming their good intentions. The fourth is being honest while remaining empathetic and courageous. The fifth value is taking responsibility for the consequences of our choices, attitudes, and actions (“Values & Behaviors,” n.d.). The sixth is doing our best to be unique and irreplaceable as professionals today and to become even more competent tomorrow.

The seventh value is to be always self-aware of the limits of our competency. We think it is essential to ask our patients for feedback to know what our strengths and weaknesses are. Knowing this information, we are able to change and be more efficient. The eighth is to remain curious. It is important for us to be able to learn as much as possible to be able to help our community. We are always in search of new innovative methods and techniques (“Values & Behaviors,” n.d.). Finally, our tenth value is to be true to our statements and to fulfill our commitments to the best of our abilities.

History

ChristianaCare presents a network of private non-profit organization medical institutions. Its goal is teaching and providing healthcare. Nowadays, 13000 employees work in the ChristianaCare network. The system was founded back in 1888 (“Careers,” n.d.). However, until recently, Union Hospital was not a part of it. The idea of collaboration between these two organizations became known to the public only on June 20, 2019. After, a period of negotiation followed. Union Hospital officially joined the ChristianaCare system on January 8, 2020 (“Union Hospital joins ChristianaCare,” 2020). This integration happened due to both organizations sharing the same values of serving the community and making a change in the field of healthcare.

Daily Responsibilities

Volunteers are an important part of the ChristianaCare mission and activities. Volunteers’ daily responsibilities depend on their knowledge and skills. Not everyone needs to work in the hospital. In some cases, it is enough to participate in the community. For example, participating in fundraising events is a significant help as well. More experienced volunteers wishing to work in the hospital are allowed to assist doctors during their activities with patients, and some work in the surgery center. Sometimes, volunteers provide their services online. I perform my tasks in person. My daily duties are mostly focused on providing logistics for patients and helping in the organization of everyday life. I help to transport patients and distribute food and beverages. If there is a need, I organize stretchers in the hallways or answer call bells. Sometimes, I stock nursing carts.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Outcomes of Volunteer Experience

Volunteering for ChristanaCare Union Hospital is a very rewarding experience. First of all, it helps to see what a hospital’s work life looks like. The Hospital provides training for volunteers, and it helps to gain new knowledge, skills, and experience. It is an emotionally fulfilling experience as well. It is exciting to be able to see people getting better and going back to the routine that their disease took from them. I learned a lot from the staff in the Hospital, and I hope that I will be able to perform the ethical and compassionate treatment they showed to every patient in my future career.
