The Bible which is the core religious text for Christianity is more than a historic narrative, collection of stories, and even a guide on how to be a Christian. It is a deeply spiritual and meaningful text that embodies the Holy Spirit and offers the faithful insight into the intricacies and depths of the religion. Through this course, I learned much about the Bible that I never knew before. I learned that there are different perceptions on how the Bible is interpreted, for example, some see it as literal while others argue that much of the text and guidance is inherently metaphorical. I learned that the Bible is comprehensive, meant to be understood as a single unit. The Bible was written for everyone, those who do and do not follow the Christian faith. Across centuries of time and national boundaries as the text was translated, people of all types have found key answers for themselves in the Bible, potentially peace, a calling, and other elements that may be inspired by the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit working through them. I think that is what the Bible means to me personally, it is a text that provides guidance, beyond on what it is like to be a Christian, but offers some level of wisdom for each person who may be seeking answers in faith. Personally, the Bible has inspired me multiple times, both in times of trouble and downs, as well as motivating me in my achievements when I place my faith in God.
One of the most well-known passages from the Bible is “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve” (New International Version, 1973, 1 Peter 5:2). I think this passage best defines my sense of purpose and vocation as I grow older and venture out into the world. Even though I am not completely sure which vocation I will choose, I know I want to be a leader. It is who I am and my passion. It is a God’s gift that I am willing to embrace in my personal and professional life. However, as well known, with leadership and power, comes responsibility. The Bible calls upon Christians to live their life like Jesus and to proclaim the gospel. That includes to care for, protect, and serve those over whom my position of leadership will put me in charge. The Bible offers many other lessons which I think are valuable in interaction with other people and living as a Christian in a professional world. That means practicing patience, acting ethically, and demonstrating wisdom in decision-making. The Bible often goes beyond religion offering insight to human nature that can be applied in all aspects of life by those willing to lead a Christian way.
Moreover, if I go into detail, I should argue that I appreciate analyzing information and debating controversial issues, and the Bible provides me with this opportunity. Let me draw an example, sometimes a problem in understanding Paul’s and James’s statements concerning true faith is raised. In the Book of James, there is an argument that “Faith Without Works is Dead,” while the Galatians states that a believer has a chance to be “justified by faith apart from the works of the Law.” From the first glance, these can be two controversial quotes; however, they contribute to each other. In other words, the good works of the Christian Law result from the living belief, which leads to the transformation of a person’s life. There is also the whole piece of studies on theological history concerning the variety of interpretations of Genesis. From my perspective, it is exciting to try to analyze and understand religious writings because they may help a person uncover his own beliefs, values and even elaborate his path in life.
In conclusion, it is necessary to state that the Bible is writing for everyone, which can be interpreted differently; thus, a person may find something that can be helpful to him specifically. Moreover, the wide range of the Bible’s interpretations does not bound a person with particular frameworks and ideas, providing a believer with freedom in the ways of manifestation as a Christian. As I stated before, I have chosen to lead a Christian way of life, supporting my belief with good works. I will remember and apply those lessons the Bible taught me: practicing patience, acting ethically, and demonstrating wisdom in decision-making in my future position as a leader.
