Kevin Morris’s essay describes the “Bicholim Conflict” hoax: an article that was shown to be completely false after more than five years on Wikipedia (Kirszner & Mandell 478). This concerning event highlights the possible drawbacks of using crowdsourcing websites like Wikipedia as reliable sources of information for the study. Wikipedia’s collaborative structure facilitates the creation of information quickly.
Still, the rigorous editorial control, fact-checking procedures, and quality control methods that distinguish really authentic academic sources are absent from Wikipedia’s open editing model. As such, Wikipedia should not be regarded as a completely reliable source for academic work, even if it may be a helpful starting point. This is because of the constant danger of errors, unsupported assertions, and outright hoaxes spread by unidentified, unscreened writers. Wikipedia can be a good place to start one’s study. Still, as it is crowdsourced and may contain false information from anonymous contributors, it should not be used as a completely reliable academic source.
Definition of a Legitimate Search Source
When conducting academic research, it is essential to rely on sources that meet strict reliability criteria. Only a data source that offers well-vetted, fact-checked material qualifies as a genuine research source. These resources are assembled by qualified authorities in their respective domains and undergo extensive peer review to prevent errors or false information.
Reputable sources uphold strict editorial guidelines and undergo many rounds of review by editors and fact-checkers to ensure that information is regularly updated to reflect the most recent research. Scholarly peer-reviewed journals, books published by respectable university presses, government statistics data, scientific reports, and expert-authored publications from recognized professional associations and research institutes are examples of sources that satisfy these requirements. Consistent adherence to factual integrity through quality control procedures sets respectable research sources apart from trustworthy academic authorities.
Wikipedia Fails to Meet the Definition
The crowdsourced online encyclopedia Wikipedia does not satisfy the requirements for being considered a reliable academic research source. Its core weakness is the open editing paradigm, which allows anyone to edit the site without regard to qualifications. The “Bicholim Conflict” hoax is a clear illustration of how quickly false material can be added to and spread across Wikipedia before being discovered and taken down (Kirszner & Mandell 478). Due to this inherent weakness, Wikipedia is far more vulnerable to the spread of false information by dishonest editors.
Popular Wikipedia pages, under closer inspection, highlight even more the absence of strict editing guidelines and fact-checking procedures. I have decided to investigate onomastics for this project. For the most part, the sources used in the articles are reliable. However, there are uncited statements on the “Surname” and “Given Name” pages that are tagged with “Citation Needed” (“Given Name”; “Surname”). For example, the following statement lacks a source: “An early form of tribal nisbas is attested among Amorite and Aramean tribes in the early Bronze and Iron ages as early as 1800 BC” (“Surname”).
In the article “Surname,” the mark “Citation Needed” appears 67 times, which indicates the unreliability of the information provided. Moreover, some parts of this publication, such as “Occupational surnames” and “Indication of family membership status”, lack links to reliable sources, making it impossible to verify their accuracy (“Surname”). In addition, a significant shortcoming of Wikipedia is its reliance on outdated sources. Most references are more than 5 years old, making them irrelevant to current research.
The pages I explored also point to problems with Wikipedia’s lax editorial standards. Several claims and statements on both pages are neither sourced nor have the “Citation Needed” plaque. Such is the case with this claim: “Some double-given names for women were used at the start of the eighteenth century but were used together as a unit […]
Those became stereotyped as the typical names of servants and so became unfashionable in the nineteenth century.” The existence of such unsupported material, lacking sufficient validation, directly violates the standards of reliable academic sources, which require careful citations. Using such an article as a source for research may lead to false statements and results.
Furthermore, because it relies on crowdsourced contributions, Wikipedia lacks robust peer-review systems to distinguish reliable research sources. The articles on Wikipedia are vulnerable to the whims of anonymous, self-appointed editors with differing degrees of expertise. Users have constant access to articles, and the content is constantly updated. Consequently, even though materials published on Wikipedia are moderated, false information cannot always be identified and removed promptly, which leads to its dissemination to a wide audience. In contrast, academic journals and expert-authored publications undergo several rounds of review by qualified subject matter experts. As such, there are doubts about the overall quality of the site’s material.
Counterarguments and Rebuttal
Proponents of the site frequently cite Wikipedia’s editing procedures as ways to ensure its credibility, purportedly by identifying and fixing mistakes. It is true that, to preserve content integrity, Wikipedia has implemented various measures, including user verification, community monitoring, and editing limits. In addition, articles often cite reliable but outdated sources.
Although their use will not be relevant to contemporary research, they can provide valuable historical perspective on the topic being studied. Nevertheless, as the “Bicholim Conflict” hoax showed, even these precautions may not be enough to prevent complex misinformation from lingering for long. Therefore, double-checking primary sources of information is important when using Wikipedia in research.
From a personal perspective, I have encountered the argument that, even though Wikipedia is not flawless, it is constantly evolving and improving through contributions from a large community of editors. Proponents assert that, over time, this iterative process improves comprehensiveness and accuracy. I concede that Wikipedia’s coverage has grown quickly thanks to crowdsourcing, but this does not automatically ensure that the material is accurate or well-researched. Two important features that may argue for the potential use of Wikipedia in research are its transparent editing history and peer-review process.
Although this platform is not peer-reviewed, it is constantly moderated by contributors who monitor and correct false statements. This helps provide users with verified information, increasing its reliability. Moreover, users can track changes to content, including checking the source of information and the credibility of the individual who made the edits. This improves the ability to check the accuracy of information and use the most reliable statements in research.
In the end, these rebuttals fall short of addressing the core shortcomings of Wikipedia’s open editing model, which lacks the quality assurance checks that distinguish authentic scholarly sources. While its inherent openness helps Wikipedia add material quickly, it also makes it more susceptible to biases introduced by anonymous editors. On the other hand, reliable research sources follow editorial guidelines monitored by qualified individuals.
To ensure the highest levels of objectivity, these sources undergo several rounds of inspection. Wikipedia’s community-driven methodology may aim to achieve comparable objectives, but it cannot replace the strong quality control systems that are part of respectable academic publications. Therefore, the use of this platform in research is possible, but only for information that cites more reliable publications and is carefully verified against primary sources.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that Wikipedia should not be regarded as a reliable primary source for scholarly writing, even though it might be a useful starting point for learning about a subject. Wikipedia cannot meet the standards of credible scholarly sources due to the risks of errors, unsupported claims, and potential misinformation arising from its crowdsourced methodology. However, if researchers do not rely only on its material, its breadth of coverage might make it a good starting point for a preliminary investigation. Any important material gleaned from Wikipedia has to be validated against reliable sources that have undergone expert editorial supervision. Scholarly work requires credible research materials that follow the principles of impartiality, objectivity, and intellectual integrity.
