Attention span is the time dedicated to a task before getting sidetracked. When attention is involuntarily drawn to another activity or feeling, it is referred to as distractibility (Becker, 2020). This variable is typically measured in psychological studies using various methods.
For instance, the longest duration a participant can sustain this ideal attentional state during a visual continuous performance task (CPT) can be used to precisely determine an individual’s attention span (Simon et al., 2023). It is a prevalent attention-span task in which participants react to targets that appear frequently and remain silent when non-targets occur infrequently. To analyze shifts in the A-span during the CPT, the researchers also measure vigilance decrements in the A-span (Simon et al., 2023). Attention span was the output variable, meaning it was measured during the tests.
My operational definition of attention span is the ability to focus on an activity without losing pace. For example, attention span is the ability of the student to concentrate on reading without being distracted by scrolling social media or talking to another person. Both examples assume that, after being distracted, the student cannot maintain the same level of concentration and must refocus on the subject (Becker, 2020). It requires both time and effort from the person, which decreases learning effectiveness. In this case, attention span is the output variable, similar to the previously mentioned research. The research question is to measure the effect of attention span on the learning progress of high school students.
The challenges of creating an operational definition stem from the need to be both specific and general. In addition, I wanted my definition to be grounded in practical experience to emphasize its applicability in real-life settings. These definitions can vary depending on the study’s context, as external factors such as population or time span can affect the concept. I had challenges making my claims universal and applicable to other research and contexts when doing this assignment.
