The position of women in modern society is a burning ethical issue, which has particularly exacerbated during the pandemic. Traditional gender roles are challenged by the pandemic of coronavirus. More and more critical functions are executed by women, yet the distribution of privileges and finances favors men disregarding the rising burden on women. Three articles are dedicated to the ethics of women’s appreciation in society.
The first ethical issue is the continuous exclusion of women from decision-making roles. This problem is addressed in detail by Papp (2020) in her article “A gender lens for COVID-19”. The author’s major complaint revolves around the unjust treatment of women in healthcare jobs. Although almost 70 percent of healthcare positions are occupied by women, men are prioritized in leading roles. Understanding this issue is essential in studying gender inequalities on labour market.
The second ethical issue is the segregation of women in low wage jobs. In her article “Coronavirus is a ‘gendered crisis’ in Mississippi as the pandemic rocks woman-dominated professions”, Wolfe (2020) notes that the United States economy stay operational due to women. Jobs like nurses, cashiers, and other frontline workers are predominantly female. They are at most risk because of the pandemic, yet their financial situation stays the same. Exploring this problem is critical for ascertaining the roots of the unjust occupational treatment of women within gender studies.
The third ethical issue is the outdated outlook on women’s role in household. Kurtzleben (2020) investigates this development in the article “How coronavirus could widen the gender wage gap”. Although women are traditionally tasked with raising children and doing home duties, while husbands earn money, the pandemic has showcased a possible shift. Investigating how women become more important in bringing income will help studying a change of status quo in gender roles.
