Workplace Spirituality: Employee Wellness and Organizational Performance

Introduction

Workplace spirituality is the organizational values framework demonstrated in the tradition to promote a superior experience through the work processes. It facilitates the employees’ sense of connection with one another in a way that they feel complete and joyful. When people share and experience solidarity in the workplace, they realize themselves, which helps them attain wonderful deeds that bring them ultimate satisfaction. Spirituality is no longer considered a religious matter because it helps in mental healing, which translates to physical wellness.

Concepts of Spirituality

Its concept is about connecting oneself, others, nature, and God. To achieve spirituality at work, one must have a proper lifestyle, connect with other people around them, understand the purpose of life, and be transcendent, hence, growth and progress. It is vital to know that one finds unconditional peace and happiness if one enriches one’s inner spiritual life. It is finding meaning, oneness, motivation, and value beyond paychecks and performance in the workplace (Singh & Singh, 2022). When colleagues experience kindness and learn that someone values them, they work to perform their best.

Importance of Mind-Body-Spirit Health

Spirituality at the workplace affects organizational performance since employees feel full of energy and give their best. A spirit full of joy keeps the mind engaged and, thus, produces good results. Devoutness develops a thriving workforce that results in positive organizational change. If spirituality is embraced, employees can gain a sense of meaning and connectedness to their work.

An organization that believes in a togetherness culture focuses on individual development. Trust and openness, tolerance of employee expression, and workers’ empowerment exist. It also leads to effective communication, flexibility, creativity, vision, and respect for others. There is reduced employee absenteeism and improved staff well-being and quality of life.

Factors Contributing to Spirituality

People engage in spirituality to find meaning in life. They experience ups and downs that lead them to engage in activities, including yoga, to focus on stress relief. Factors that contribute to spirituality at work include spiritual orientation, meaningful work, compassion, and alignment of values.

In other words, these involve physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. It is a tool that maintains happiness, consistency, peace, and a positive attitude, hence, the basis of achieving success (Singh & Singh, 2022). It improves the commitment and motivation of employees.

Spiritual Mission Statement

The spiritual mission statement is to help people understand their worth by encouraging them and being kind and thoughtful, which will lead them to demonstrate their skills confidently as they serve clients and work with others. This mission statement brings people in the workplace together and creates a sense of oneness. The spirit of teamwork is demonstrated; there is love in the environment, and every worker yearns to come back the following day to feel the atmosphere full of a positive attitude. Eventually, this contributes to good performance, and everyone in the organization wins.

The Five Muscles of the Soul

The Psoas muscle is the deepest part of the human body. It affects organ functioning, structural balance, flexibility, range of motion, muscular integrity, strength, and joint mobility. The five muscles of the soul include the vertebrae in the lower back, abdominal wall, pelvic brim, top, and inner thigh. When the muscle flexes, it brings the thigh up toward one’s chest, helping to hike the hips up at a time when they walk, thus playing a role in bending the torso to the side (Lemay et al., 2019).

The muscle of the soul is the body organ that holds onto traumatic experiences. When one releases the muscle with the right exercises, the body releases the long-standing responses to trauma. In the long run, this helps one work effectively and perform well since stress has been reduced, thus accomplishing the mission statement set.

Examples of Spiritual Activities: Practicing Meditation or Yoga

The steps involve just sitting quietly and watching what happens. One should refrain from receiving phone calls or responding to doorbells. It might be hard to sit and allow thoughts to pass through the mind, but one may learn essential qualities of their restless mind. Listening to the sounds of life by closing their eyes and tuning in to the voices percolating around them.

Practicing bare attention to the surroundings might make one feel the present moment’s warmth, coolness, softness, and hardness. One can attach their mind to the breath and simply watch it with their mind’s eye (Lemay et al., 2019). One can use a mantra by choosing a favorite word, prayer, phrase, or poem fragment and repeating it softly and slowly. One can also practice kindness by focusing one’s inner attention on someone who needs extra care and compassion.

Spending Quiet Time Alone Pondering the Meaning of Life

One obtains benefits from spending time alone, including emotional and mental advantages. It involves putting aside influential gadgets, including phones, and sitting quietly to allow their brain to process things. The steps involved include meditating, a habit that can change one’s life slowly for the better—writing a journal about something they like or a topic they have researched and setting goals that take control of their lives. Reflect on their goals and spend time in solitude tracking their progress and paying attention to their emotions because this moment is significant and has a transformative experience (Indradevi, 2020). At this stage, the mind connects with the body, thus having the kind of feeling that should be expressed to others, therefore creating a spiritual mood at work.

Ways to Encourage Spirituality in the Workplace

It is a long process to create a spiritual workplace. Employers and organizational leaders need to change their way of doing things and foster spirituality at work. Defining and setting a clear mission and purpose for how clients should be served with products and services. Ensure that actions taken by one’s company are positive and do not affect other entities. Hiring individuals who understand the mission statement (Alfarajat & Emeagwali, 2021). Making the purpose of the organization known to all employees.

Spirituality in the workplace is a relatively new phenomenon that is currently gaining importance worldwide. Many organizations emphasize spiritual values to unlock the full potential of their employees. When workers realize their meaning in life, they perform their allocated duties to achieve the best of their work. Spiritual employees create a better working environment, thus helping companies make the world a better place, especially for people who have experienced traumas.

Stretching the muscles of the soul ensures that the body releases distress hormones and keeps one relaxed. An individual who practices spiritual activities helps their mind release stress hormones and process new things that are not hurtful. The togetherness mood creates a spirit of teamwork, contributing to the organization’s success.
