Workplace Violence in Nursing: Impacts, Consequences, and Prevention Strategies

Importance of the Workplace Violence Issue

Violence in the workplace against nurses is a significant concern, with adverse consequences for nurses, fellow clinical staff, and the organization as a whole. According to global findings, approximately a quarter to two-thirds of nurses encounter some form of workplace violence each year (Havaei, 2021).

Outcomes of Workplace Violence

The repercussions of such violence on nurses encompass heightened job strain, diminished job contentment, absenteeism, burnout, sleep disturbances, fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder, apprehension, and potentially suicide. These outcomes can impair the quality of patient care, as nurses grappling with these challenges may struggle to fulfill their duties effectively. Additionally, workplace violence may contribute to a high turnover rate among nurses, thereby escalating recruitment and training expenses for the organization.

Moreover, observing workplace violence against fellow nurses can adversely affect the mental well-being and job contentment of other clinical staff. This situation can foster a hostile work atmosphere and exacerbate the cycle of violence within the organization.

Concerning the entirety of the establishment, instances of violence in the workplace can harm its standing, lower the spirits of employees, and lead to legal and monetary repercussions. Healthcare leaders must address workplace violence effectively to ensure a secure and supportive environment for all personnel.

Strategies to Prevent Violence

Furthermore, legally and morally, nurse supervisors must prioritize the safety and welfare of their team. Failure to prevent or address workplace violence could result in accountability for nurse leaders (Kafle et al., 2022). Nurse leaders must actively cultivate a culture of safety and mutual respect within their units to reduce the likelihood of workplace violence.

Personal Experience

Within our organization, we have established guidelines and procedures to handle workplace violence. These encompass strict policies against such behavior, avenues for reporting incidents, and educational sessions on diffusing tense situations. Though these efforts are commendable, I see room for improvement. This could entail bolstering security, providing additional conflict-resolution training, and conducting routine workplace evaluations to identify potential triggers of violence.
