“Abortion Law and Policy Around the World”: Source Evaluation

Introduction

The article “Abortion law and policy around the world” was written by Marge Berer and was published in June, 2017. It was initially published at Bethesda, Maryland in the United States by the Harvard University Press and Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights. The article was sponsored by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine, under the National Institute of Health (NIH). The sponsoring body, NCBI, is funded and fully approved by the United States government. Apart from the United States government, the article was sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), located in Victoria specifically for health policies and programs. From my argument supporting the legalization of abortion under extreme conditions, the article is precise, unbiased, accurate, and reliable due to its year of publication and the substantial information it contains.

The Credibility of the Source

The article “Abortion Law and Policy around the World” is an authentic and reliable source due to various reasons. It provides reliable information on the crucial topic of abortion due to its current year of publication. An article published several years ago is unreliable since the information might have changed. The world is dramatically changing due to technology, and therefore, information also is evolving. So many changes have been made on the perceptions and policies related to abortion hence, the need to use current sources with reliable and updated information.

Marge Berer is a sophisticated author who has been superintending the International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe Abortion from the year 2015. She is the founder and has been the Reproductive Health Matters journal editor from 1992 to 2015. Also, Marge Berer was the co-founder and the chairperson of the steering committee overseeing the International Consortium for Medical Abortion from 2002 up to 2011. With such experience in reproductive health and matters pertaining to abortion, her article’s credibility is unquestionable.

The article has been sponsored by a number of renowned organizations, including the government of the United States. For instance, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the largest biomedical library globally and a leader in health informatics computational research. It plays a crucial role in bringing biomedical research into reality. Other sponsors such as NIH and DHHS are all accredited bodies in their areas of specialization, thus enhancing the article’s credibility. The article was published under the Health and Human Rights Journal, which empowers new voices and ideas in the field of human rights. In addition, the information in the article has been supported with facts from other sources, which are well-stipulated in the reference section. Integrating and acknowledging ideas and facts from external sources eliminates bias and increases the authenticity of the article.

The Usefulness of the Article

The article aims to avail precise opinions based on various laws and policies on the social issue of abortion around the globe with clear examples. The article revolves around safe abortion and the necessary conditions for the procedure. It elucidates how restrictions and laws related to abortion do not have a significant sense when it comes to the public and legal domain. The article insists on the woman’s consent, accessibility, and affordability as the irrefutable components for safe abortion.

Based on my argument of supporting abortion legalization under certain exceptional conditions, the article is useful since it advocates for reforming the laws and policies illegalizing abortion. For instance, it explains how safe abortion needs to be treated like any other type of normal health care practice hence, supporting my argument of legalizing abortion in certain scenarios (Berer, 2017). The article is valuable since it has thorough discussions and results on the topic of abortion across various countries in the world. For example, it explains the laws and policies of many countries ranging from Canada, Brazil, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, amongst others. In addition, the article provides explanations on various grounds under which abortion should be legalized. According to Berer (2017), abortion should be legalized when the mother’s life is at risk due to rape, fetal development abnormality, eco, due to the economic crisis, and on mother’s request. Such exceptional grounds to allow abortion legalization to back up my argument.

Conclusion

From the consideration of various factors, the article is credible and will be useful since it meets significant criteria. Abortion is a sensitive and challenging social topic with a number of unsolved debates. The article provides insights and several opinions from professionals and organizations in the field of sex, reproductive health, and human rights. The author is amongst the experienced individuals in such areas of specialization, hence increasing the credibility of the article. It avoids prejudiced and baseless opinions by incorporating other external sources by other authors. In addition, it has been sponsored but accredited medical bodies and the government of the United States. The article is useful since it has information relevant to my research topic on legalizing abortion on certain grounds. Therefore, it meets both the credibility and usefulness threshold hence relevant.
