Every institution lays down rules by which its recognized members work by. These rules help to create a sense of order within the institution or organization. Rules also serve the purpose of giving guidelines to the members between what is right and wrong so that if punishment has to be meted, it is done within a given jurisdiction. Ethics in an institution serve the purpose of giving standards by which members have to live by. Professionalism is required in an institution where the professionals have to interact with their peers, other professionals the community and the government in whatever capacity.
Both the AIA code of ethics and the NCARB rules of conduct stipulate that the architect or an architectural firm acting independently have the choice of engaging in the architectural code of ethics or not.
