For this project, I decided to research what possible benefits can come from cooperation between scientists and science fiction writers regarding the negative image of artificial intelligence that is often being depicted as ‘malicious.’ Throughout my research, I have examined numerous peer-reviewed and newspaper articles written by various scientists, IT specialists, book reviewers, and even businessmen whose products utilize AI. My final decision came to an infographic that will highlight issues stemming from popular depictions of AI.
The audience for my project will be the population of the science fiction discussion board, as their opinion matters in promoting the cooperation between writers and scientists. It is possible to place the infographic as a separate post on the respective board, such as a subreddit for science fiction fans. The adverse impact of the negative perceptions of AI, such as the need to keep ‘explainability’ of the processes behind its decisions, must be clearly shown (Bloomberg). The content should include sufficient evidence of the discussed rift between discourse communities, such as public statistics on differences between opinions of the general public and tech experts (Edelman). Journalists’ opinions on the subject from both perspectives should be mentioned as well since such papers as “The Frankenstein’s Monsters of the 21st Century” explain ethical concerns with remarkable detail (Self). All the information must remain on-point, short, and sufficient for understanding the idea behind the project.
In contrast with my research paper, the infographic poster requires less discussion of benefits and targets the audience that is most likely not involved in AI research of fiction writing directly. Although my topic concerns two diametrically opposite discourse communities, I believe that science fiction fans can serve as the link between the proposed stakeholders. The argument has to be less narrow to keep readers engaged, as I will avoid devolving into details. The design of the infographic contains both thought-provoking images and attention-grabbing text. Readability must be kept as the highest priority since some visitors may have issues with visual content. In conclusion, the project must attract attention, provoke the desired response from a reader, and call for further action to resolve the discussed issue.
