Breathing constitutes one of the most fundamental activities of daily living. It supplies the body with oxygen and is a valuable source of relaxation techniques. Although holding breath is linked with notable health benefits, overdoing it can pose serious health complications. Additionally, people performing the art should master the right approach to reap optimal benefits.
“Breathing is Fundamental” is used about the importance attached to respiration and life. One is alive as the process remains uninterrupted. According to Elliott Physical Therapy (2017), all body parts rely on oxygen supplied through breathing. For instance, digestion and cognition require oxygen to help an individual break down ingested food and provide mental clarity. Additionally, the gas is crucial to advancing the immune system activities and reduction of stress levels. Thus, breathing supports all body activities, making it difficult to have continuity of life when the process ceases.
The act of holding a breath has both positive and negative implications. The most notable merit is saving a life when confronted with some circumstances. Additionally, it contributes to the relaxation of the body and mind (Wilson, 2020). For example, when one falls in the water, they can hold their breaths to avoid inhaling water, drowning them. On the other hand, holding the breath for prolonged periods impairs ventilation by raising the amount of Carbon (IV) oxide in the blood. Ultimately, an individual can experience a blackout, lung collapse, and decompression sickness (Jewell, 2020). Thus, if uncontrolled, holding a breath can be fatal.
Breathing is synonymous with life. It provides essential oxygen, which supports body functions. However, holding the breath for prolonged periods raises Carbon (IV) oxide in the blood, which is fatal if it persists.
