Introduction
The two central systems of capitalism and socialism remain the focus of debates for decades. The manifestation of moral concepts in the systems presents another crucial issue. Many scholars are confident that socialism is a better way to preserve the morality of society and individuals based on the idea that a state-centered approach can lower market corruption. However, this essay will focus on the capitalistic views as more moral due to the opportunities for individual freedom and open markets that support the development of society.
Discussion
The central aspect supporting that claim is that personal and manufacturing freedom allows morality to flourish and develop, while socialism threatens fundamental human rights. According to Jahan and Mahmud (44), self-interest, freedom to enter and exit markets, and freedom to choose concerning consumption, production, and investment are the pillars of capitalism. In addition to the government’s limited role, it helps regulate the market situation to maintain a healthy society where each individual has a right to participate.
At the same time, based on Gasper’s research, “Marx saw that what is of cardinal importance is not the personal behavior of the individual but the struggle between social forces, not personal morality but the fight to establish the good society” (24). The establishment, however, is centered in the government’s hands, which is not regulated by society and individual needs. Hence, creating a perfect society with high morals can cost personal right of choice and development.
On the other hand, the market analysis of morality does not emphasize that any systems present a potential harm to morality. According to Choi and Storr (58), markets can be seen as any other form of moralization, such as religious, educational, or civic. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider the management of other moralizing spheres in system measurement. For instance, if other aspects are corrupting, the limitation in the market sphere will be reflected through governmental policies accordingly.
Conclusion
Thus, morality cannot exist in the isolated aspect of social relationships and functioning. While morality presents more individual freedom, it is evident that a similar approach can be applied to morality. At the same time, governmental limitations can restrict social, moral, and actual development and individual rights, such as choice. Hence, capitalism is a more promising system due to more open opportunities for the market and personality.
