Introduction
The ability and willingness to recognize and analyze one’s thoughts, words, and actions have always been an indicator of a well-developed moral character in an individual. My peers naturally played a more significant role in my life as I became more self-sufficient. People call it self-reflection, whereas psychologists use the word “introspection” (Cherry, 2020). According to Cherry (2020), introspection is a process that involves looking inward to examine one’s thoughts and emotions. As a person who was taught this from an early age, I can see that this moral quality is lacking in modern society. In this paper, I want to reflect on the importance of courage and concentrate on introspection in my family, as well as share my personal experience of using it.
The Influence of Peers
The influence of peers on the development of my confidence can hardly be overestimated. Students may spend more time with peers than with siblings and parents because school and other activities take them away from home (Lyness, 2015). Peers include people of the same age, attending the same school, church, sports team, or community, in addition to close friends. My peers, by all means, impacted me, giving me the courage to share their views and attitudes (Lyness, 2015). It is natural for people to identify with and compare themselves to their peers when thinking about how they want to be or what they want to achieve.
However, I am also well aware that adolescence can be tricky due to the negative side of the impact of peers. Teenagers are trying to find the courage concerning who they are, what they are excellent at, where they will fit into the world, and what their duties are (Lyness, 2015). It is reassuring to face those challenges with people who share similar passions. However, I believe I hear about peer pressure from adults more than I do about the benefits of belonging to a peer group, such as guidance counselors, teachers, and parents (Lyness, 2015). Even if I do not hear much about it, peers profoundly influence one another and play critical roles in each other’s lives.
Courage in My Family
Courage as a self-reflection is a thing that my parents and their parents taught me, and it significantly influenced the development of my moral character. In my family, this word means a combination of moral qualities such as a sense of responsibility, mindfulness, noticing personal flaws, being willing to improve oneself, and working hard. I still have memories of my dad telling me that courage is like renovating a house with less cost and more significant impact. It is interesting to note that my cousin has also made his interpretation. He says courage is like a new patch for a video game where the game is himself. Courage has helped me fix many negative things in my character; for example, it helped me get rid of irritability and anger issues a few years ago. Courage is that inner human resource that allows growth morally and the development of high ethical standards (Cherry, 2020). Modern cultural trends show that many people in American society in general lack this moral character. However, in modern society, courage has helped people to settle their differences hence leading to a better understanding of each.
Personal View on Courage
I view courage as a positive quality that makes people deserve respect. Individuals have made an enormous contribution to providing descriptions in terms of this value over the years. According to a study on courage, a three-year-old child can be courageous and skilled to independently participate in various activities and duties without feeling frightened or anxious in some circumstances (Kapur, 2020). The only virtue that governs me formally praise with public honors remains courage. Doing the right thing requires moral bravery, especially when the risks are adverse and involve opposition and disapproval from others. For example, provided, employees have not carried out their job obligations in line with their bosses’ expectations and have received criticism from them. In that case, they must demonstrate honesty and use morality and ethical attributes. As a result, moral bravery empowers people to put ethics and morality into action. One advantage of courage as a moral character, it has helped people to build confidence in dealing with various issues both during positive and negative moments.
In my life experience, courage can be used on several occasions because taking risks, which is an indispensable part of human life, requires courage. As an individual, I need a strong determination, mindset, ability, and the confidence to take risks. Risks are necessary for some situations, but they can also be avoided in others. However, as someone focused on taking chances, I must guarantee that I recognize the importance of courage. Courage in the face of various hazards will aid in the efficient and productive completion of activities and tasks (Kapur, 2020). As an individual, I often see courage as a moral trait, which has helped me in dealing with different obstacles in life.
Conclusion
Courage is viewed as a positive quality that distinguishes people as deserving of respect and appreciation. Individuals with courage are more likely to be able to overcome their fears and vulnerabilities. Physical, social, intellectual, moral, emotional, and spiritual courage are the six categories of courage. Having courage can help individuals improve their ability to deal with different occasions, either positive or negative, and build confidence. Taking risks is part of human life whereby requires a strong mindset, determination, and confidence. Individuals are capable of acquiring physical attractiveness by practicing moral character that requires courage. In different situations, having moral bravery empowers people to put ethics and morality into action.
