Determinism vs. Freedom: Philosophical Implications and Real-Life Applications

Introduction

One of the main topics in philosophy is how free a person is in their actions and whether there is determinism in the nature of things. Determinism and freedom are two concepts that describe two different sides of this question. This essay will explore the differences between the two using examples to provide a greater understanding of their respective implications.

Determinism vs. Freedom

Determinism, at its core, presupposes that everything that happens in the world follows from causes and effects and that all past, present, and future events are inevitable. In other words, everything happens according to a predetermined plan (Bobzien, 2021). On the other hand, freedom means that a person can choose and make their own decisions, regardless of external circumstances.

Example

To illustrate the differences between these concepts, one can give an example from everyday life. For example, think about the situation where you can watch a movie on your home TV or go to the cinema. From the perspective of determinism, your choice was predetermined based on several factors, such as your preference for movies, the availability of the movie theater, and your mood at the time of the choice (Bobzien, 2021). On the other hand, from the standpoint of freedom, you are free to select whatever appeals to you the most, and this is independent of any environmental factors.

Physical vs. Abstract Freedom

Consider the following intricate and variegated explanation regarding the distinction between physical liberty and freedom of choice. Physical freedom denotes an individual’s capacity to move and execute actions. In contrast, freedom of choice refers to the capability of selecting one’s path and making decisions despite external constraints (Bobzien, 2021). As an illustration, determinism espouses that all actions undertaken by an individual are predestined, thus rendering freedom of choice a mere illusion.

Conclusion

In general, determinism and freedom are antithetical concepts, highlighting our ability to make decisions and engage with the world. Nevertheless, it is crucial to note that the question of freedom and determinism has been a contentious debate among philosophers for centuries, with no definitive answer. Individuals can exercise their discretion in deciding whether they support the notion that all events in the world are predetermined. Nonetheless, the verity that freedom and determinism are quintessential concepts in philosophy remains immutable, allowing one to understand the world better.
