Introduction
Any career path starts from childhood – the time when a personality forms their preferences, tastes, predispositions, and skills. Parents play the leading role in this process, attaching love and amusement to specific types of activity. In this way, children better understand their development, paying attention to particular subjects at school and later in university.
Such an approach helps future professionals a great deal, indicating their strengths and weaknesses across different areas and potential jobs. It is a good option to economize time when choosing career paths and enhancing the right qualities. A personal career plan depends on internal and external social and environmental factors, shaping an individual’s perception that eventually determines competency direction.
Parental Engagement in a Career Choice
There is a great variety of professions with strong potential to be in demand in the future across multiple markets. My friend Alex, as an involved and curious type of character, chose the niche that combines academics and journalism – researching. It has always been his desired personal sphere because it allows him to grow in different directions.
Being a child, Alex was predisposed to creating engaging stories, which his family noticed and endorsed his skills. Concentrating on this area motivated him to progress and to learn a lot to gain “higher peaks.” Alex started his career as a freelance writer, and then he was hired as an academic researcher. Now, he sees the path to becoming a journalist in international crime investigation.
However, as in any profession, the jobs he possessed had their advantages and disadvantages. The benefit in his area is the opportunity to grow and develop across various fields of journalism and academia. The main weaknesses are constant pressure and the need to stay up to date on multiple global events. Consequently, my friend fully realizes that this is his “nature,” and he sees himself as a successful professional in a few years.
Alex’s parents’ attitude toward their calling positively influenced his career perspectives. They have always motivated him to understand the importance of the chosen path and how to enhance the existing industry environment with his unique personal input. Consequently, the way he values his work does not differ from that of his parents. It is influenced by the level of responsibility, which is high enough to receive excellent feedback and share knowledge.
My friend’s parents are currently entrepreneurs in farm goods distribution who value people’s needs and demand for better products. Their vision and mission, built in a positive, highly productive way, influence their work. As a result, being successful business owners, they see their career development in building more production hubs in new locations.
The reason Alex’s parents are in the proper professional place in their lives is the role their schools play. Each of them was lucky to have great mentors who helped them reveal hidden talents. The teachers adapted the general curriculum to practical outcomes, focusing on future career skills needed to find the right path. The mother and father developed strong competence by taking elective management development courses during their high school years.
Such a scenario affected the aspects mentioned above, resulting in a timely and fitting delivery of knowledge. It relates to the TEDx video, which tells the story of a staffing director (TEDx Talks, 2015). As a pupil, he was unable to reveal his strengths, which affected his future career path (TEDx Talks, 2015). Fortunately, Alex’s parents were lucky to be in a contrasting situation, which helped them find the job of their dreams by discovering their personal values and interests.
As my friend wanted to understand his family’s desire to progress and enhance their work, he decided to show them one of the TEDx videos to see their reaction. The video explains how important it is to feel fulfilled in any work that actually takes up the vast majority of a lifetime (TEDx Talks, 2014). His parents reacted positively to the content, realizing that they are happy because they find fulfillment in their careers, which brings them pure happiness through high income and the possibility of spending more time with family.
At the same time, the information in the video does not suggest any multicultural facets to consider. For this reason, the “aha” moment for his parents in Chapter 1 is that young adults no longer achieve the same level of financial stability as previous generations (Dugger, 2016). They were raised with different values and standards in a time when the psychological aspect of professional decision-making was less complex than in the modern world.
Conclusion
Conclusively, every successful career owes to endorsing and enhancing a personality’s skills and preferences from early childhood. The family, as a social environment, plays a crucial role in motivating a child to become an expert in the future, helping them find the right path. Teachers and mentors at schools are also important drivers for competence development because they help children reveal hidden talents. It is done practically through specific, adapted courses tailored to certain professional predispositions. One of the most significant outcomes of such an attitude to future calling is the feeling of fulfillment when undertaking a particular job. Eventually, career paths and pursuit directions depend heavily on various social factors and environments.
