God’s Existence and the Meaning of Life in Spiritual and Scientific Perspectives

Introduction

The idea of God is not exclusive to Christianity or monotheistic religions. Since the dawn of time, humanity has believed in God, deities, and spirits. These divine entities come in different images and personalities. However, the ultimate essence of their character has always been similar. Like our distant ancestors, we reach out to God in search of wisdom and spiritual guidance.

God represents the highest, transcendent authority in the universe. He gives humans morals and supports them in times of need. Believers can always share their burdens with God and find a renewed meaning in life through communication with the Creator. Even atheists are subjected to the laws of the universe created by God. In that regard, God’s existence makes human life meaningful, and those who reject the idea of God cannot change the truth.

Why God’s Existence Is Necessary for a Meaning in a Human Life

In theory, one can question the necessity of God’s existence by offering examples of alternative sources of meaningfulness. For instance, one can claim that the meaning of life lies in personal happiness, career, or relationships (Kim, 2022). However, such a perspective ignores the origins and the premise of what makes these sources available to the people. God did not create the world in its current shape — war, sickness, and suffering were brought to it through the sinful ways of humanity. In contrast, the original God’s design was perfect as it gave everyone the ultimate meaning of peace and goodness (Kim, 2022).

However, the chaotic nature of humanity distorted the human perception of God’s Creation. Whereas career, relationships, and personal happiness may be meaningful to a particular individual, they are still prone to change. They thus cannot serve as a basis for the true meaning of life. Pursuing knowledge, riches, and experiences is futile without finding God’s goodness and peace. As such, God is necessary for a human being to regain the original meaning of life.

An atheist may argue that science has a successful track record of explaining natural phenomena previously attributed to God. As such, one cannot claim that God can realistically be the Creator of the universe. Hence, if God is not a Creator, he cannot act as a source of the ultimate meaning in life. However, scientific understanding and explanation of Creation are no more than guesses.

For example, the influential Quantum Theory posits that the universe created itself into being and generated its fundamental laws without any intervention (Alpert, 2019). If one assumes that the Quantum Theory is correct, the universe is essentially transcendent and omnipotent. Such a perception of the universe is similar to Gottfried Leibniz’s description of God as a “necessary being which has its reason for existence in itself” (as cited in Alpert, 2019). Therefore, God’s existence would be necessary for giving meaning to everything, including human life.

Conclusion

Overall, God’s existence is necessary from spiritual and cosmological perspectives. From the spiritual standpoint, God makes human life meaningful by offering goodness and peace to the people. In terms of cosmology, God brings meaning into human lives as the Creator of the universe. Ironically enough, scientific theories of Creation do not rule God out.

Moreover, scientists have stumbled upon fundamental matters that are difficult to conceptualize. When science tries to explain why there is something instead of nothing, it gives answers similar to classic definitions of God. As such, God’s existence gives meaning to human life, even if atheists deny that idea.
