Indian Music vs. Western Influence: Traditional vs. Modern

Introduction

Indian culture is highly articulated through art, especially music and movies. Most Indian-based musicians often highlight the principles of traditional music in their songs. As entertainment grows, the process of composing these forms of art is embracing Westernization. Mostly felt in music, Westernization is incorporated in the form of jazz and pop music, among others. Therefore, the distinct principles of Indian music and movies identify the Indian culture from the popular culture.

Music Principles

One of the general principles relating to the processes of musical tradition and transformation is that Indian music is played in a timely manner, either from home or in concerts. For example, there are morning and evening ragas that may not be played at any other time. Songs are to be played at the concert’s start, middle, and end (Bakan 144). Another principle is that Indian music is more virtuous and less provocative (Bakan 146). The infusion of Western culture is slowly changing some of these principles in modern days. Most of the musical examples presented in the chapter are appropriate choices for exploring Indian music traditions. However, some music, such as the “Improvisations” by Ravi Shankar, falls outside the boundaries of the traditions (Bakan 150). The songs in this album infuse raga with American jazz music, thus reducing the chances of experiencing Indian culture.

Playback Singing

There is a critical difference between playback singing in Bollywood and Hollywood. The Indian culture accepts and recognizes playback singers as professionals (Bakan 158). However, playback singers in Hollywood are just workers who are paid but not regarded as professionals. The primary difference between Bollywood and Hollywood’s cultural attitudes and values is illusion and authenticity. While the Indian producers and the audience accept the music illusion, the Hollywood audience and producers thirst for authenticity. The American culture of music is based on promoting talents in the real world. Therefore, allowing playback in the movies would feel like denying talents a chance to showcase their abilities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Indian culture, as opposed to Westernization, is effectively displayed in traditional Indian music and Bollywood practices. Indian music is slowly transforming as the singers embrace popular culture. Bollywood, on the other hand, retains its distinction, especially from Hollywood. Playback singing is one of the critical factors that maintain Indian culture in Bollywood. The primary difference between the playback singing in Hollywood and Bollywood is illusion and authenticity.
