Jack Welch’s Leadership Style in General Electric Company

One of the outstanding functions of a leader is to create a vision for his or her organization. It is necessary to have a vision in order to ensure an organization realizes its goals. Every individual in an organization can create “a concrete mechanism for examining and verifying the successful acquisition of an organization’s vision” (Landsberg, 2011). Leaders can borrow from Jack Welch’s leadership strategy. Welch is one of the leaders who were able to communicate his vision for his organization. Welch encouraged his employees to adopt his vision and eventually made General Electric a successful organization.

To have a strategic vision and fail to use the best leadership style can make it impossible for an organization to realize its goals (Cohen & Bradford, 2005). A leader should always create the best vision for his or her business organization. After creating the best vision, the next thing is to develop the best mechanism for examining the manner in which the organization adopts its vision. According to Cohen and Bradford (2005), leadership is necessary because it ensures there is a workable strategy in the organization. This is the best approach towards a successful enterprise. That being the case, a leader should be able to engage all the people and communicate the vision to the people. From a personal perspective, I believe that a leader should use a number of steps to translate an organization’s vision into success and organizational gains.

The first step for a leader is to gather the needed “raw materials”. As Jack Welch did, a leader should engage all the employees. This is the strategy used by most of the successful companies today. The raw materials include the people and the necessary financial resources. The second step is identifying the right people the functions and duties in order to achieve the targeted goals. The third step is to identify the specific duties for different individuals and employees. These three steps will make it easier for a leader to put the organization on the right path towards its success (Cohen & Bradford, 2005).

I strongly believe that a leader should always communicate to his employees. This will be the fourth step towards creating a successful business organization. The fifth step is to deliver the vision to the workers and ensure they are aware of the targeted goals and expectations. With these steps, a leader will be able to address the major challenges and issues that might affect the performance of the organization (Landsberg, 2011). As studied in class, an organizational leader needs to have an innovative and creative mindset. This is the best approach towards ensuring the organization realizes its vision.

Although different leaders will use different steps and strategies, the important thing is to focus on the targeted goals and remain focused on the organization’s vision. With proper coordination, communication, decision-making, and strategy, a leader will empower his or her employees thus translating the organization’s vision into measurable and attainable objectives (Landsberg, 2011). The strategy will encourage others in the organization to adopt the vision as their own. It is agreeable that “plans” and “strategies” alone cannot make an organization successful. Although these two aspects are essential, the concept of leadership is necessary because it encourages people to work together. The approach will transform the vision into success. With the use of the above steps, leaders will empower their employees and eventually achieve the targeted goals.
