Kotter’s Sense of Urgency: Benefits and Strategies of Creating Appropriate Motivation

Appropriate vs. Inappropriate Urgency

A sense of urgency is the most significant component of any organization because it motivates employees to give their all to their work. According to Kotter, it is critical to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate urgency and to avoid complacency (Kotter, 2008). Right urgency does not mean the worker will be constantly stressed by the large number of duties assigned to them.

Rather, the appropriate urgency is to provide employees with an answer to a pressing problem while also demonstrating that the solution will help the company improve. Wrong urgency frequently leads to burnout and stress, and it rarely helps to solve any problem. In contrast, complacency, which implies not altering anything at all and standing still, is equally dangerous (Kotter, 2008). If used correctly, the sense of urgency helps the organization group solve current problems, and it should be addressed to the employee’s feelings rather than to data and figures.

Benefits of a Sense of Urgency

The sense of urgency is essential to Kotter, but he sees it very differently from most people. Kotter argues that many businesses lack sufficient adaptability because they are on the verge of a crisis (Kotter, 2008). Also, the company struggles because it is dumping a large number of unnecessary tasks on employees while failing to solve basic problems. However, Kotter believes that employees should not relax.

Kotter argues that when an organization is on the verge of failure, there are several options for solving the problem, the first of which is to turn to employees (Kotter, 2008). This is essentially the feeling that drives people to do things better and faster, not because staff members have too many tasks to complete, but because the boss has persuaded them that something urgent needs to change to improve the company, save it from a crisis, and assist in problem-solving. Employees get inspired to act quickly, perhaps even faster than usual.

Kotter also maintains that a sense of urgency can drive positive change in the company. After all, when a company is complacent, it thinks it is doing everything correctly and thus does not need to change. A sense of urgency suggests the company will not remain stagnant but will constantly evolve, implementing novel strategies such as globalization or emerging technologies (Kotter, 2008). This can also be contrasted to the company’s timeliness, whether it is attempting to keep up with the times or resolving problems in traditional ways. One of the greatest challenges of modern organizations is complacency, which is the belief that there is some status quo that will keep things the same, even though the world is constantly changing.

Creating a Sense of Urgency

Kotter suggests several strategies for creating the appropriate sense of urgency. One of the most intriguing aspects is his comparison of how two managers provided their reports on the company’s decline. The first manager delivered an excellent, lengthy, data-heavy presentation, and, despite his nervousness, he was asked questions afterward, albeit a little reservedly (Kotter, 2008). The second manager did not provide much information, but to calm the audience, he made some jokes at the start and then included many of his own stories (Kotter, 2008).

After the second manager’s presentation, everyone in attendance applauded. Even though both managers were advocating for the same thing, to begin modifying and enhancing something in the company, the second manager received more attention, and his speech had a greater impact on the audience. According to Kotter, the best way to persuade employees of the importance of urgency is to appeal to their emotions through personal examples and stories.

Many organizations, regardless of how quickly they work or develop their ideas, require a sense of urgency right now. Some organizations must eliminate complacency, while others do not require employees to perform a million tasks to stay afloat. It is quite simple to instill the necessary sense of urgency in employees to help them reorganize the company and bring it out of crisis.
