Walmart Company Analysis: Services, Workforce Hiring Process, and Accessibility Policies

Company Name and Address

The selected company for the present assignment is Walmart, a global retail corporation. Its headquarters are in Bentonville, Arkansas, but the firm has more than 10,500 stores, 14 of which are in Los Angeles, California (Walmart, 2023a).

Products or Services

Since Walmart is an omnichannel retailer, it offers a wide variety of products and services, ranging from food to vehicle parts. According to official information, all goods are classified into 24 categories, including groceries, furniture, electronics, video games, patio & garden, baby products, personal care, sports, and home improvement (Walmart, n.d.). Therefore, customers can find both essential and specialized products in Walmart stores.

Mission Statement

“We help people save money and live better around the world” is Walmart’s mission statement (Walmart, 2023a). It reflects the firm’s core business strategy in the low-cost segment and its geographical distribution, as Walmart has stores in more than 20 countries worldwide.

Number of Employees

Walmart is currently the world’s largest employer, offering positions across a variety of sectors. According to the latest official report, the company has 2.1 million associates, of whom 1.6 million work in the United States (Walmart, 2023a).

Demographic Information

Walmart strives for inclusive workplaces, meaning its workforce is diverse. By the end of 2022, the company employed 50.27% of its workforce as women, and women of color accounted for 30.09% of its total workforce (Walmart, 2023b). These numbers are slightly different for the American sector: 53% and 27.12%, respectively (Walmart, 2023b).

Regarding age, Walmart employs all demographic groups from 16 to 65+ years old, but the most prevalent sub-population is 20-24 years old (16.73% of the workforce) (Walmart, 2023b). The average age of employees with hourly pay is 38.38 years, and the mean manager age is 41.12 years. The overall ethnic distribution at U.S. Walmart is 49.96% people of color and 49.63% Caucasian. Among them, 21.12% are African American, 4.18% are Asian, 19.93% are Latinx, and other ethnicities constitute 4.74% (Walmart, 2023b). In summary, the demographic information reflects Walmart’s diverse workforce.

Positions within the Company

Since Walmart operates in many settings, there are multiple positions within the company. They are grouped into five primary categories: Stores & Clubs, Corporate, Healthcare, Technology, Distribution & Fulfillment & Drivers (Walmart Careers, n.d.). The most common positions include cashier, stocking & unloading, online order filling & delivery, administration, freight handler, and other jobs that do not require extensive education (Walmart Careers, n.d.). However, the company also requires specialized employees, including data analysts/scientists, managers, healthcare professionals, and designers.

Current Number of Job Openings and Application Procedures

According to the official website, the current number of job openings across all locations in the United States is 72,793; however, fewer are available in Los Angeles, California. Furthermore, they mostly include specialized positions, such as motion design, advertising manager, Walmart Connect partner manager, and service roles (Walmart Careers, n.d.). Based on a brief search, Indeed, LinkedIn, and other related websites report a larger number of job openings. Overall, Walmart stores in Los Angeles are in less urgent need of new employees than those in other cities and states.

Nevertheless, the general description of job openings and application procedures is mostly the same for all positions. For example, the partner manager role for Walmart Connect in Los Angeles has been an open career option on the Walmart Careers website since late 2023 (Walmart Careers, 2023). The description provides information on the employment type (regular/permanent), career area (marketing and customer insights), job function (advertising), position type (salary), and location (Los Angeles, CA). The same template is used for other positions, including the most common responsibilities, such as cashier and front-end services.

Then, the description outlines the primary duties of the job (what you’ll do & what you’ll bring) to explain the competencies candidates need. These depictions differ significantly based on the chosen position and location. Next, each job opening showcases benefits & perks, which typically include competitive pay, stock purchase plans, health plans, 401(k) matches, maternity/paternal leave, and other incentives (Walmart Careers, 2023).

Based on the search, some positions offer performance-based benefits, while others offer only the bare minimum, so it is critical to thoroughly review the job description before applying. The job openings list required qualifications that may differ from the competencies. They include minimum and preferred qualifications, such as a bachelor’s degree, several years of field experience, and other requirements (Walmart Careers, 2023). It is important to note that the most common positions, particularly cashier, front-end services, and janitorial work, do not demand these credentials.

Lastly, the application process is similar for most job openings. The easiest way is to fill out the form on the website, which takes approximately forty-five minutes to complete (Walmart Careers, 2023). It is critical to include all details, as it is impossible to change the application after submission.

After the candidate submits the form online via the Walmart Workday website extension, the company will contact the candidate. The procedure is simple and resembles a job hunt through other websites (Indeed and LinkedIn). Finally, according to Walmart, all personal information is processed and protected through the company’s native applicant tracking system (ATS).

Compliance with ADA

Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of the most illustrative metrics for gauging businesses’ willingness to create inclusive workplaces. Walmart’s President’s Inclusion Council is the primary organizational entity that implements policies on inclusivity, and according to the official statement, accessibility is its top priority (Malloy, 2023). The website itself adheres to WCAG/Section 508 ADA regulations, which comprise 8 points covering visual elements, text, pages, labels, headers, color ratios, and UI elements to ensure a pleasant online experience.

Within the context of the present assignment, the most critical notion is how Walmart helps its employees with disabilities. The company provides multiple disability accommodations through personal communication with managers and, in some cases, through external support via MySedgwick applications (OneWalmart, n.d.). Reasonable adjustments include paid time off and potential changes to policies, practices, environments, and job responsibilities, depending on the disability type and the accommodation decision (OneWalmart, n.d.).

Disability coverage also has several classifications, including short-term and long-term disability, which can affect the outcomes. These benefits typically cover from 50% to 100% of wages during disabilities that prevent employees from working; however, the requirements might be relatively strict. The associate benefits book is a 360-page summary that explains all eligibility checks, disability lists, and compensation, which can be relatively confusing (OneWalmart, 2024). Nevertheless, the company is devoted to providing reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities and ensuring high accessibility.
