Leadership Behavior Recommended by Admiral McRaven

Positive leadership conduct drives teams to be more productive and helps them achieve their objectives. It also aids in the retention of top talent within departments where team members cherish collaborative opportunities. Admiral McRaven’s speech during the Austin 2014 Commencement Address for the University of Texas points out several behaviors integral for leaders. The essay presents the behaviors recommended by Admiral McRaven as essential to leaders.

Firstly, leaders should be focusing on setting objectives for their subordinates. According to the Admiral, completing set out tasks such as spreading the bed creates a sense of pride, encourages individuals, and brings out the vitality of little things (Texas Exes, 2014). Furthermore, leaders often face challenges as they try to reach their objectives, and during these moments, they need assistance. According to Admiral McRaven, great leaders seek help to change the world (Texas Exes, 2014). He believes that one person cannot affect change, and leaders need help to realize their objectives.

Moreover, exceptional leaders understand that sometimes things fail to go as planned despite their preparations. The Admiral assures leaders that they will fail and encourages them not to be afraid (Texas Exes, 2014). Failure defines individuals as they learn from their mistakes, find growth, and identify new solutions. Additionally, great leaders understand that they must be willing to take risks to be innovative (Texas Exes, 2014). Therefore, leaders are frequently tasked with making judgments and devising effective and novel solutions to challenges.

Lastly, leaders need to show their skills during stressful situations. In other words, they need to be at their best in the darkest moments (Texas Exes, 2014). As such, one does not retreat but overcomes cognitive and emotional challenges by leveraging personal attributes and strengths to do the right thing. Under challenging conditions, leaders must stay proactive and optimistic (Texas Exes, 2014). They are charged with re-igniting the spark of future success when individuals lose hope.
