Admiral McRaven’s speech during the Austin 2014 Commencement Address for the University of Texas points out several behaviors integral for leaders. Failure defines individuals as they learn from their mistakes, find growth, and identify new solutions. Therefore, leaders are frequently tasked with making judgments and devising effective and novel solutions to challenges.
Lastly, leaders need to show their skills during stressful situations. In other words, they need to be at their best in the darkest moments (Texas Exes, 2014). As such, one does not retreat but overcomes cognitive and emotional challenges by leveraging personal attributes and strengths to do the right thing. Under challenging conditions, leaders must stay proactive and optimistic (Texas Exes, 2014). They are charged with re-igniting the spark of future success when individuals lose hope.
