Mental health is no less important than physical health. In some cases, it plays a significant role and can only worsen the condition of individuals in the absence of proper treatment. In modern society, mental awareness and the emergence of more specialists who work in this field are gaining a significant role. Over time, the topic of mental health is gaining more and more prevalence. Therefore, the study of this topic has a critical and relevant character for solving the problem of the mental well-being of the population. Particular attention should be paid to the influence of mental health stigma, which can exacerbate the crisis associated with the struggle and treatment of diseases related to the psychological state of patients.
First of all, it is necessary to study at what stage mental health and knowledge about it are in the modern world and how this concept has developed over time. Research stated that “throughout history, people with mental and behavioral disorders were routinely blamed ostracized, isolated, imprinted, tortured or killed” (Shpancer, 2022, para. 2). Thus, the term mental health crisis arose, which is defined as “a mental health crisis is any situation in which a person’s behavior puts them at risk of hurting themselves or others and/or prevents them from being able to care for themselves or function effectively in the community” (“Navigating a mental health crisis,” 2018, p. 4). This is mainly due to the emergence of such phenomena as the mental health crisis and the stigma around it. The resolution of these problems can have a notable impact and effectiveness in providing assistance to those who need psychological help. Society needs to be more educated about what mental health is because there are so many forms of it that many do not know.
Ignorance of this aspect can contribute to the aggravation of the psychological state of the individual, which then affects the physical well-being. In the absence of awareness about the types of mental illnesses, it can lead to the fact that people will not be able to correctly identify the presence of a problem and contact specialists in time. There are many deviations associated with this area of health, for example, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, insomnia, anxiety, PTSD, ADHA, addiction, and substance abuse (“Common types of mental illness,” n.d.). The presence of such a wide variety of diseases necessitates the dissemination of awareness and education of healthcare providers and the entire population. Moreover, it will help to provide timely and productive care and will contribute to a faster awareness by individuals that they may have some problems. Hence, with ignorance and insufficient qualifications of specialists, individuals may be misdiagnosed and be subjected to improper treatment. Thus, medical providers need to conduct clear and proper training to improve the outcomes of their activities. It would prevent some of the issues with mental patients having setbacks or getting into an altercation with authorizes, causing them to hurt themself and others.
Another serious problem for the study of the spread of mindfulness is the stigma of mental health. The research defines it as “a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something… a mark of shame or discredit” (Shpancer, 2022, para. 1). It has severe negative consequences for both individuals and medical professionals. This may be reflected in the fact that if the presence of any psychological issue is denied, patients may not receive timely help (“Center for workplace mental health,” n.d.). APA’s 2022 Stress conducted a survey examining the effect of the global pandemic on individuals. Therefore, it emphasized that “many reported worse mental health, lower physical activity, disturbed sleep, and increased reliance on unhealthy habits-all of which have and well-being the workplace environment, and productivity” (Anthony, N.D., para. 1). This information proves that multiple internal and external factors have a strong influence on the psychological state of people. Thus, they will be at risk of deterioration of their condition, which in the broader future will worsen the quality of public health.
In conclusion, this work considered the problem of the mental health crisis, which is associated with a lack of knowledge and the profound role of the stigma associated with the presence of psychological problems. There are many mental illnesses that can, in the absence of proper care, develop into more severe problems and also affect the physical condition. That is why it is so essential for people to be well educated, especially healthcare workers. In addition, law enforcement needs more education to stop mental health patients from attacking them while they are trying to help in the process. The lack of knowledge about mental health can have dire consequences for patients. This makes it necessary for employers to have well-being employees, as it can provide primary care for mental health patients. Moreover, spreading knowledge about mental health will help to get rid of the stigma and provide workers with a place where they feel safe and content.
