Methods That Texas Companies Can Deal With Labor Shortages

Introduction

Donald Trump’s decree tightens the existing visa ban, including certain work visas for non-immigrants, to protect the U.S. labor market in the wake of the economic downturn associated with the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. president bans foreign workers’ entry on H-1B visas, L-1 visas for workers, and seasonal workers on H-2B visas, except catering workers. However, the decree is most likely to affect the Texas region, enterprises are suffering from the pandemic, and after the order, they will lose the workforce (Connely, 2020). This decision affects the business because several enterprises that depend on foreign workers, including large technology companies and business associations, will suffer.

Significance and Connection

The decree refers to the public policy, and the ultimate goal is very complicated. This article is relevant since the immigration situation and the pandemic have a detrimental effect on the Texas business sector, as Drexell Owusu shows (Connely, 2020). On the one hand, the government’s efforts can be explained by measures against an unstable economic situation. On the other hand, it seems that Trump is using a pandemic to achieve his long-standing goal of restricting immigration to the United States.

Questions and Opinion

According to Owusu, Texas firms will be less competitive on the world stage as critical places with the required technical experience of workers will not be filled (Connely, 2020). Therefore, correction and improvement of the current situation is an essential part of this topic. In fact, Donald Trump made immigration the main elements of his election program, and this attitude was expressed several times in his actions. Precisely, Donald Trump, in his inauguration speech, stated, “we will follow two simple rules: Buy American and Hire American” (Navarro, 2019). In March, the president introduced new healthcare rules that allowed the deportation of immigrants. He extended the April Declaration, which temporarily restricts the permanent residence of some foreigners in the United States, and the suspension of visas is Trump’s last step to limit immigration in response to the pandemic (“Proclamation”, 2020). Consequently, the government’s actions are not only precautionary but also pursue policies against immigrants, without taking into account the situation of Texan companies.
