Racism: Scene for Screenplay Illustrating Racism

Introduction

This scene is a father-son after school conversation about racism. The boy, whose name is James, is six years old and he went to the first grade, where he met four other boys, the same age, the same race, all white. They spend a lot of time together, make friends and go to visit each other. A black boy, Kevin, wanted to join their group, but two boys from James’ company were against it because Kevin is black.

The scene begins with the moment when the father picks up his son from school, and they travel home together, on the way to discussing the last day at school. James tells his father that his two new friends did not accept Kevin into the company. They explained to James that they did not need to accept him into the company because Kevin is black and angry, and they do not want to be friends with him.

This is the middle of the screenplay since the beginning was laid in the school, where the whole situation was started. Then a serious conversation with James’s father on the way home from school, and the end would take place at school where he would talk to his new friends about how racism is wrong, and they should accept Kevin into their company. The situation aims to tell the growing son that he can not be biased against people who have dark skin because they are the same as white people.

The behavior of James’ friends was dictated by their parents, who do not promote the idea that racism has no place in modern society and people can not be judged by the color of their skin. The deep meaning of the screenplay will be that it needs to tell from an early age that all people are equal, whether they are black or white. It is correct to evaluate people only by their actions and not by external data.

The problem of racism in schools is quite acute, as relationships between people begin to form in school, and some children may change their minds under the influence of other children. Farmer (2020) claims that schools should build on cultural values and involve staff in communicating with children about these values. And this is correct since many relationships begin to develop from a young age, and adults need to have the right influence.

Scene

Father: James, how was your day at school? Have you had difficult lessons?

James: I like going to school, but all lessons are difficult, especially math.

Father: Is there something you don’t understand? We can do some math together at home, and I will explain everything you do not understand.

James: Well, I would be happy if you could explain some things to me that I do not understand.

Father: All right, tell me more about school, how are your new friends?

James: We spend all the changes together, have fun and joke, but today there was one situation in which I was confused and did not know how to behave.

Father: Tell me more, I can help you, and in the future, it will be easier for you to understand how to do the right thing.

James: We have a black boy in our class, and his name is Kevin. He is knowledgeable and very well versed in many subjects. He wanted to make friends with us, spend time at recess and lunch. Two of my friends would not let him be friends with us because we are all white and he is black.

Father: James, you understand that you cannot choose your friends based on their skin color, right?

James: I would like to be friends with Kevin, and he knows a lot, has read a lot of books, it is interesting to communicate with him. My friends said that he is black and not like us, so we cannot share with him.

Father: Did they tell you why they think that if Kevin is black, then you cannot be friends with him?

James: Yes, their parents told them that they cannot be friends with black children because they are evil and bad.

Father: James, this doesn’t seem right, and this is not the way to behave. Black people differ from us only in the color of their skin and nothing else. Do you think that the difference in skin color is so essential that you will not communicate with Kevin because of it?

James: I really want to be friends with Kevin, but then I will not have those two friends who do not want to communicate with him.

Father: It would be best if you understood that people who choose their friends only by the color of their skin are wrong and you don’t need to be friends with them. Kevin also saw that you were white, but he wanted to be friends with you because he thought you were friendly and engaging. Not accepting a person and considering them wrong because they are black is called racism.

James: Father, what is racism and why is it so bad?

Father: Racism is the prejudice that one nation is superior to another. Being a racist is horrible because people should not consider themselves better than others by belonging to another race. You can achieve success in school or sports and be better than others in this deservedly, but you can not consider yourself above others because you are of a different race.

James: I do not want to be like my friends, and I want to be friends with Kevin. I will try to explain to them that racism is terrible. If they still do not wish to accept Kevin into our company, I will no longer be friends with them.

Father: Son, this is the right thing to do, and please remember that you can evaluate people by their achievements, their attitude to other people, and you, but in no case should you assess people by their race. I am sure that you and Kevin can become good friends and be happy with this friendship more than in your past.

The next day, James talked to his friends and told them how bad and wrong it was to judge people by their skin color and race. He began to be friends with Kevin, and his friends eventually joined them, as they realized that everything James had told them about racism was correct. They apologized to him that they did not accept him into the company because they thought he was black, and therefore evil.

Conclusion

As a writer, I chose a first-grader who learns from his father to be tolerant of people. In the process of writing the work, I came across the fact that in life, indeed, there are times when parents can instill incorrect thoughts in children from childhood, which can have a negative impact on their entire future life. At the very beginning, I planned that children would more clearly show a negative attitude towards a black boy by publicly insulting him. I decided to remove this sentence, as I may believe that children are not so evil that they can be cruel to children of another race. The most festive scene is when James’ friends realize they are wrong and become friends with Kevin.
