Salem Nurse Placed on Leave Over TikTok

In my humble and subjective opinion, Salem Health’s actions are justified. Firstly, based on the videos on TikTok, it becomes clear that the employee’s professional qualities and behavior do not correspond to the position. Secondly, the nurse is the face of Salem Health, and her inappropriate Internet activity damaged the organization’s name and reputation. The company affirms that “this one careless statement does not reflect the position of Salem Health” (KGW News, 2020). Like any other employer, Salem Health must work on the risks associated with employees’ activity on social networks. Such action is done because of the well-established perception on the Internet, according to which opinions of an individual worker are equated with a company’s standpoint.

The Nurse’s Actions

I think that the Salem Health nurse’s actions were, to put it mildly, incorrect. They violated not only the organization’s fundamental values but also contradicted the norms of behavior of a nurse. Accordingly, the nurse’s post was unethical and completely unprofessional since it affected other people’s feelings and emotions regarding the dangerous virus. Amanda reported that her grandmother was sick with COVID-19, and it was uncomfortable for her to watch the videos in which the nurse was dismissive of the pandemic (KGW News, 2020). Furthermore, this post was dishonest because it was an example of a negative attitude to health and protection from coronavirus.

Three Things

To protect my career regarding social media use, I use three things: developing a positive digital persona, publishing content that does not affect anyone’s feelings, and using a friendly tone when talking to others through comments to posts. These methods allow me to form a positive image and a good impression of myself. Additionally, they give me the opportunity to maintain good relationships with my employer and colleagues.
