Rising Tide of Cyber Threats
In an era of rapid technological advancement, the prevalence of cybercrimes has surged, posing significant challenges to national security and financial stability. As the digital landscape expands, so does the scope and sophistication of cyber threats, necessitating a robust defense mechanism against such illicit activities. Alshammari and Singh (2018) delve into this critical issue in their study, “Preparedness of Saudi Arabia to defend against cyber crimes: An assessment with reference to anti-cyber crime law and GCI index,” published in the Archives of Business Research.
The article points out that, with the worldwide growth in the use of information and communication technologies, cyber communication is increasing, thereby heightening cybersecurity threats. Cybercrime includes a variety of illegal activities, from identity theft and fraud to cyberterrorism and espionage [1]. Saudi Arabia has witnessed a surge in cyber attacks, especially since the rapid adoption of the Internet. Large-scale incidents such as the Shamoon and Shamoon 2.0 attacks highlight the seriousness of these threats to the kingdom.
Saudi Arabia’s Legal Framework and Global Alignment in Combating Cyber Threats
To counter the growing cyber threat, countries worldwide must strengthen their cybersecurity systems. One key aspect is developing a comprehensive legal framework to effectively combat cybercrime. The authors emphasize the need for legislation to combat cybercrime, including data theft, system intrusion, and unauthorized access.
In 2007, Saudi Arabia enacted the Anti-Cyber Crime Law (ACCL), an important step in curbing cybercrime within the kingdom [1]. This law defines and punishes various cybercrimes, including unauthorized access to computer systems, websites, and information networks. The study also highlights the importance of aligning national cybersecurity efforts with global standards and best practices. The Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) serves as a useful tool for assessing countries’ cybersecurity readiness and policy development. By using such indices, Saudi Arabia can benchmark its cybersecurity initiatives against international standards, thereby improving its cyber resilience and readiness to address challenges.
