Social Change in Corporate Strategy: Benefits and Risks

Integrating Positive Social Change Into the Business Strategy

Pros

There are several advantages to including an organization’s objective to foster positive social change in its strategic planning. First, among customers who are becoming more conscious of social and environmental issues, it can boost brand reputation and loyalty. Socially conscious and sustainable business strategies draw devoted customers.

Second, and just as importantly, putting positive social change efforts into action can boost employee happiness. Employees who are driven by the positive social impact of their work are happier. Third, a competitive edge and innovation can result from embracing social change. Organizations that take the initiative to address social issues can drive product innovation, create new markets, and gain an advantage over competitors in developing markets.

Porter emphasizes the importance of integrating shared values into business plans and leveraging social entrepreneurship for lasting change (Walden University Center for Social Change, 2018). Because economic value aligns with society’s demands, this promotes a more inclusive, socially conscious capitalism that ensures both organizational success and societal influence.

Cons

Furthermore, there are always risks associated with fusing economic principles with an emphasis on constructive social transformation. Stakeholders may resist social change initiatives seen as mere image boosts, and overspending can strain budgets. Operational difficulties can arise when dealing with complex issues or collaborating with different stakeholders.

An Organization with an Unsuccessful Positive Social Change Initiative

A real-life example of an organization that failed to implement a positive social change initiative is Abercrombie & Fitch. When CEO Mike Jeffries made contentious comments in 2006 regarding the brand’s exclusive marketing techniques, the company was hit hard in 2013. Once the #FitchTheHomeless campaign went viral, it incited public indignation and disgust from celebrities.

The problem persisted despite attempts to address it, including meetings with rights groups, which harmed the brand’s reputation and resulted in losses. The #FitchTheHomeless campaign went viral, sparking public outrage and celebrity disapproval. Despite efforts to manage the crisis, including meetings with rights groups, the controversy persisted, damaging the brand’s reputation and resulting in financial losses.

Abercrombie & Fitch could improve by authentically addressing inclusion and diversity issues. This could include implementing comprehensive diversity and inclusion training programs, revising marketing strategies to be more inclusive, and engaging diverse communities to rebuild trust and credibility (Robson, Campbell, & Cohen, 2013).

In addition, the organization could conduct thorough stakeholder analysis and scenario planning to anticipate potential impacts and develop proactive mitigation strategies (Wilburn & Wilburn, 2016). Long-term growth and social impact prospects can be realized by integrating shared values into corporate strategy. However, to overcome challenges such as financial repercussions and stakeholder skepticism, corporations must sincerely commit to social change.
