The Disaronno Originale Brand’s History and Culture

Introduction

For my research, I chose a unique product that enthralls connoisseurs of alcoholic beverages worldwide. Disaronno Originale is a famous Italian liqueur that is famous for its unparalleled almond nut flavor. It has quickly gained popularity worldwide due to its bitter and moderately tart taste, a distinctive feature among other liqueurs. The liqueur is dark amber and belongs to the “Amaro” class because it contains almond and apricot kernels. It is these that give the liquor a flavor reminiscent of marzipan. A large amount of a chemical known as benzaldehyde, contained in apricot kernels, gives Disaronno a distinct almond flavor. The oil contains 100% alcohol, burnt sugar, and the pure essence of seventeen plants and fruits (Briggs, 2023b). This product has an interesting history, a unique recipe, and a beautiful design that makes it unique.

Disaronno Originale

The country of origin of this liquor is Italy, the region of origin is Lombardy, and it is produced in Saronno. To this day, the liquor is only produced in Saronno, Lombardy, Italy; however, it is exported and sold worldwide and has become known as Italy’s favorite liquor. The history of this liqueur goes back several centuries. According to folklore, the first amaretto liqueur was created in 1525 by a widow who soaked apricot seeds in brandy (Fleur-de-Gigi, 2018).

She presented it as a gift to the painter Bernardino Luini because this young widowed innkeeper inspired Luini to paint the Madonna on the church in Saronno. Giovanni Reina’s family uncovered the innkeeper’s recipe from 152 5 in the 1600s (Fleur-de-Gigi, 2018). The Reina family kept the recipe secret, passing it down from generation to generation. In the early 1900s, Domenico Reina opened the first store and workshop in the heart of Saronno, where the first Disaronno Originale was produced (Fleur-de-Gigi, 2018).

The store was located near the streetcar line that ran from Milan, and the store became known as Domenico Reina Coloniali. The first Disaronno was bottled in a regular cylindrical bottle, but later the shape of the bottle was changed to a square bottle, which set it apart from other types of liquor bottles. The taste of the liqueur was appreciated by many, and in 1947 the Reina family founded their own company Industria, Lombarda, Liquori, Vini & Affini Saronno (Fleur-de-Gigi, 2018). It produced not only Amaretto but also wines and other liqueurs. Since the end of the 60s, this alcohol began to be sent abroad as well, gradually expanding the geography of cooperation.

Today connoisseurs can buy Disaronno in more than 160 countries of the world. Interestingly, the technology of Disaronno’s Amaretto is still kept secret; only the general principles are known. Apricot kernels and almonds are infused in brandy, and aromatic herbs and spices are added. By the way, artisans at home got the knack for making Amaretto from moonshine, which some people make stronger than the original (the original drink has only 28% alcohol).

Disaronno has a signature square bottle and a square cap with gold Disaronno lettering around the cap, which had not changed much since the 1970s, when a master glassblower in Venice, Italy, designed the bottle. The bottle was made of soft sparkling glass. “The unmistakable shape of Disaronno is now recognized worldwide as one of the symbols of Italian style. It is no coincidence that the bottle was exhibited at the Louvre in Paris at the exhibition “L’objet du Design, 99 objets pour un siècle” (Disaronno, 2022). Disaronno Originale was rebranded in 2001 when the final decision was made not to market it as Amaretto. Amaretto means “slightly bitter” in Italian. Earlier, it was called Amaretto di Saronno. Even in the current economy, when companies are under pressure to produce flip and new products for the market, Disaronno Originale has only created one item: a creamy liqueur version that will be available on grocery shelves.

Dissarrono is a traditional digestif that should be served after dinner. It best shows all its flavors when sipped slowly and in little swallows. It can be served as an appetizer with nuts, fruit, chocolate, or cheese. This robust almond liqueur complements hot beverages such as tea, coffee, and hot chocolate by imparting a nutty taste. In which Disaronno plays an important part, Cocktails should be given special attention. Apart from the taste, the liqueur’s calling card is its square bottle, designed by Venetian artisans. However, because this almond liqueur is merely wrapped in a mystery, there is another tale of the bottle’s origin.

The bottle for the Disaronno liqueur is said to have been crafted by the top master glassblowers on the island of Murano. The bottle’s unusual shape was designed to let people know what liquor to pour into a glass, even in complete darkness. The label Disaronno Originale was last modified in 2009 (Briggs, 2023a). Illva Saronno and other well-known Italian designers collaborated on a limited line of bottles to benefit the UN-sponsored “Fashion for Development” charity foundation. Moschino Special Edition, Disaronno Originale – the bottle design is fashioned in traditional black and red hues, and a portion of the earnings went to a specific African initiative. The second edition is Disaronno Originale, Roberto Cavalli Limited Edition, inspired by Roberto Cavalli’s 2015 collection, which has an exotic safari theme. Disaronno Originale, Versace Limited Edition, published in 2013, is the third collection (Briggs, 2023a). The primary colors are white and blue, with gold embellishments, and a percentage of the earnings were donated to women working in the fashion business in underdeveloped nations

The original Disaronno Amber Liqueur is not distilled in London or Ontario. Disaronno International LLC is the only importer and retailer of Disaronno in North America. It is a subsidiary of Illva Saronna SpA based in New Jersey, USA (Disaronno, 2022). The Busker Irish whiskey, Tia Maria coffee liqueur, Rabarbaro Zucca amaro, Duca di Salaparuta, Corvo Sicilian wines, and Florio Marsala are imported by this firm. As previously stated, Illva Saronna SpA, situated in Saronna, Italy, sells Disaronno in over 160 countries. Disaronno has been recognized as the “ambassador of Italian DolceVita,” which means “sweet life (Disaronno, 2022). These are the cocktails that may be found at local restaurants.

Conclusion

Disaronno Originale is one of the most famous Italian liqueurs, and it is believed that this Amaretto was the first. Its history and mysterious recipe attract the attention of connoisseurs worldwide. Its almond flavor and bouquet of spices make it unique, and its blend of light bitterness and sweet notes allows connoisseurs to enjoy every sip. Disaronno does not have the viscosity typical of this beverage class and is very easy to drink. That is why it is a unique product with specific characteristics that are loved worldwide.
