Parental involvement is parents’ involvement in their child’s life and education. This can include helping with homework, attending parent meetings and conferences, volunteering at school, and communicating with teachers. Parents actively engaged in their children’s learning without being controlled can positively impact their children’s academic success (Garvis et al. 35). These parents are supportive and provide a nurturing environment that encourages learning.

In general, parental involvement is any activity that supports and enhances a child’s education and life at school. On the other hand, bad examples of parental involvement include being overly controlling or overbearing, doing homework for children, or pushing children to achieve unrealistic academic goals. However, parents must find a balance between being involved and being overly controlling. The detrimental effects of being excessively controlling are well-documented and can lead to a host of negative outcomes for children.

Negative Effects of Inadequate Parental Involvement

However, parental involvement in education also has some drawbacks. Some parents may overload their children and become “hyper parents” who set too high expectations for their children, which can be damaging to their mental health. In addition, some parents may misjudge their children’s knowledge and not consider teachers’ opinions (Jeynes 125). For example, a parent who bans all television and video games or who punishes the child severely for playing video games may not be allowing the child to develop their interests and make their own decisions. This can also lead to resentment and rebellion from the child.

It is also important to note that the benefits of parental participation in their children’s academic development can only be achieved if the parents’ involvement is directed towards supporting and helping the child’s success and development. If parental involvement is limited only to controlling the educational process, this can negatively affect the child’s development. Parents should not intervene too much in their child’s life to avoid disrupting their personal space and developing independence.

Encouraging parents to support their children’s education is crucial, as it helps children adapt to school and achieve better results. To encourage parents, governments and schools can provide parents with information on how they can help their children in their education (Kong 109). This can include informational brochures, websites, conferences, and other events. Parents can also be provided access to educational resources and materials that can help them support their children’s education. Schools can also hold parent meetings and conferences to discuss issues related to education and schooling.

Conclusion

In general, parental involvement plays an important role in children’s success in school. This is not only because parents can help their children learn and create suitable conditions for studying, but also because they can provide the necessary support and motivation for successful learning. Parents should be included in the educational process, and governments and schools should provide the appropriate tools and resources to support parents in their roles. If all parties work together, children’s education can be improved, and their achievements can be significantly increased.
