The cross-national integration into the world community, which is also known as the globalization process, has been the focus of people’s attention since the middle of the 20th century. The rapid technological progress that has been witnessed over the past few decades seems to have heralded the era of globalization. However, despite the large number of technological tools that the humankind has been provided with, globalization is yet to be completed. By focusing on changing the way, in which people view communication, one is likely to enhance the progress of international integration and improve the chances of building a global community.
The current pace of the globalization process seems to have been in decline for several years due to the misconception about the stage that it has supposedly reached. As Ghemawat (2012) explains, most people tend to overrate the extent to which globalization has affected the world. The expectations that most people have about the impact of the globalized environment on the communication processes are false, according to the statistical data mentioned by Ghemawat (2012).
The study conducted by the researcher shows that the world is far from being flat – quite on the contrary, the range of obstacles to uninhibited communication seems to have grown. Therefore, there is a pressing need to raise awareness about the subject matter. Shedding light on the issue is also important because of the misconceptions about the dangers of the process that anti-globalists spread.
Golding (2009), in his turn, details the problems that people are likely to face when promoting the further progress of globalization. For instance, the fact that the contemporary governmental structures are nearly fossilized and, therefore, do not allow making significant changes to society should be brought up as a great obstacle to people’s way of boosting the globalization process. The problem in question could be resolved by starting a statewide initiative that would gain enough support to be acknowledged as a legitimate tool for encouraging globalization. Indeed, according to Golding, the interweaving of societies that globalization implies helps reduce the resistance that some of the more conservative members of the society show, therefore, reinforcing the resilience levels of the global society.
At present, enhancing the speed of globalization means addressing the inequality issues that prevent the communication process from occurring at the global level (Sharp, 2011). The lack of equality should not necessarily be attributed to racial and ethnic disparities; apart from the identity-related conflicts, financial and economic discord also affects the relationships that the members of the global community have with each other. By resolving the essential societal issues, one is likely to create prerequisites for addressing relevant political, economic and financial concerns.
Ghemawat’s and Goldin’s findings show that the process of globalization is at a significantly less advanced stage than people believe it to be, which means that the tools for enhancing the process and encouraging people to build a global community need to be sought. Furthermore, many people fail to realize that a range of factors such as growing inequality impedes the globalization process. More importantly, the fact that not all members of the population are ready to become a part of the globalized community needs to be brought up. By creating premises for successful communication and reducing the impact of negative factors, one is likely to contribute to the increase in the pace of globalization.
