Problem Presentation
Unemployment and lack of economic opportunities are severe problems in today’s society. They can have long-term consequences for people who are unable to earn a consistently high and stable income. Thus, these factors negatively affect all aspects of the state since unemployed citizens cannot always pay taxes.
The problem of unemployment and lack of economic opportunities can affect different categories of the population and negatively affect all social groups, without allowing them to earn a living. People with low-earning opportunities may be negatively impacted by being unable to care for their health and quality of life. All these questions lead to the fact that society begins to experience significant difficulties in maintaining a certain standard of living.
Thus, it is impossible to fully achieve sustainable development goals and create a favorable economic environment. The younger generation may be particularly affected by the lack of economic opportunities and the inability to find employment. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight the main factors that affect this problem.
Annotated Bibliography
Cefalo, R., Scandurra, R., & Kazepov, Y. (2020). Youth labor market integration in European regions. Sustainability, 12(9), 3813. Web.
The primary purpose of this source is to highlight and explore the synergistic effect of various configurations that have been used as methods of youth employment. The source’s content includes the investigation and analysis of empirical data related to unemployment and those aspects of influence that do not allow the development of a sufficiently solid and large labor market. In addition, the authors devote considerable space to reviewing existing developments in this topic to find out key trends. Scientists discuss data collection and research methodology to clarify precisely how the information was analyzed and avoid misunderstandings. After presenting all the facts, the authors pay considerable attention to discussing the results obtained and concluding.
The authors use various tools, such as the youth labor market integration (YLMI) index, to prove their conclusions. In addition, much attention is paid to quantitative data collected through various surveys and other studies. Thus, statistical documents and data provide significant assistance in disclosing issues related to the number of unemployed.
In doing so, the authors draw on the work of other scholars to describe a better understanding of poor economic conditions. This explains how this source relates to other resources reviewed in this work. The authors consider related concepts, and each paper supplements data missing in others. At the same time, it is difficult to say how much the source data correspond to other articles since the authors consider youth and not all people, as in other works. The source answers a research question: one of the main reasons for the low level of employment is the misinstitutionalization of countries.
Sudan, F. K. (2021). Technological Disruptions, Youth Unemployment and Vocational Education Challenges in South Asia: A Short Report. Global Economics Science, 80-97. Web.
The main idea of the source is to analyze South Asia’s unemployment situation to identify the factors that most affect job opportunities. The content and elements of the source consist of an introductory part in which the author reveals the problem of employment, literature analysis, methodology, and research results. The last point discusses the author’s position regarding the results. The structuring of the work is clear, and the orientation of the work is not complex.
To confirm the work’s main ideas, the author uses evidence based on a review of other sources and collected information on unemployment. The author’s main argument regarding the low level of youth employment in South Asia is technological progress, which has led to reorienting people to technical specialties. The author uses numbers and statistics for several years to compare employment rates in his study.
Historical documents and works of other authors are considered, from which statistical information is borrowed. This source is related to other topics that indicate the causes of problems in the labor market. It supports other sources in that it complements knowledge about this problem. At the same time, the article answers the research question in such a way that unemployment is caused by the fact that young people lack the necessary skills.
Samuel, L. J., Gaskin, D. J., Trujillo, A. J., Szanton, S. L., Samuel, A., & Slade, E. (2021). Race, ethnicity, poverty and the social determinants of the coronavirus divide: US county-level disparities and risk factors. BMC Public Health, 21, 1-11. Web.
The source’s purpose and main idea are to study the population’s low economic opportunities and how this affects the receipt of certain benefits and employment. The source’s content includes the disclosure of the problem’s background, the methodological substantiation of the tools used, and the discussion of the results. Source elements are logically structured and presented in the correct sequence.
To support their beliefs, the article’s authors used data from sociological calculations and the study of necessary variables as evidence. One vital evidence is that percentages designate certain racial groups with lower economic opportunities. Statistics are widely used by the authors in this study. Historical documents are also essential to support, as scholars have traced comparative figures with previous years while relying on the work of other authors.
The connection of this work with other sources is due to his research on the causes of low living standards. At the same time, the evidence and conclusions support what other authors have found. In this regard, the source may answer the research question by identifying race as one of the factors that may prevent employment.
Mhazo, T., & Thebe, V. (2021). ‘Hustling Out of Unemployment’: Livelihood Responses of Unemployed Young Graduates in the City of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Journal of Asian and African Studies, 56(3), 628-642. Web.
The authors’ primary goal in this paper was to find the relationship between providing agricultural jobs and the youth’s potential and economic opportunities in Africa. The structure of the work consists of an introduction to the topic, methodology, and central sections, each of which is devoted to the consideration of the problem in more detail and narrower than the previous one. The authors also pay attention to the context of the problem, which makes the work specific. At the same time, in conclusion, scientists give some strategies that can improve the situation.
The evidence base of the authors lies in the study of the state policy of Zimbabwe that provides youth with work in the agricultural sector. This, in turn, negatively affects their opportunities and the country’s economic development. At the same time, as evidence, the authors use the statistics of indicators before and after the introduction of the proposal. The authors’ use of figures and statistics is rare in the work.
Historical documents are considered to contextualize the problem. At the same time, the authors weakly rely on the work of other scientists. This source relates to the rest of the research in that it offers plans for solving the problem, thus supporting the rest of the work. It also allows for answering the research question, as the authors identify a factor that reduces economic opportunities.
Parker, E., Tach, L., & Robertson, C. (2022). Do Federal Place-Based Policies Improve Economic Opportunity in Rural Communities?. RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences, 8(4), 125–154. Web.
The fundamental goal of this work is to find out how investment in rural development programs affects the solution to employment and economic opportunities problems. The article’s structure consists of a background, consideration of methods, results, and discussion of the data obtained. The primary evidence that the authors use is statistical indicators and comparisons of poverty levels over several decades. Thus, the authors found that more funding is associated with better economic opportunities.
Obtaining evidence was made possible through statistics, historical chronicles, and the work of other scientists. Links to other sources are provided by examining factors related to economic opportunity. This supports the sources by supplementing them with information about government funding and conditions in rural areas. The research question is revealed by identifying factors contributing to increasing opportunities and reducing unemployment.
Bal-Domańska, B. (2022). The impact of macroeconomic and structural factors on the unemployment of young women and men. Economic Change and Restructuring, 55(2), 1141-1172. Web.
The source’s main idea is to study the relationship between the unemployment rate and macroeconomic determinants. The work structure consists of an introduction, main sections that reveal different views on the problem, and a discussion of the results. The author uses data from 28 European countries and analyzes their economic growth to prove his conclusions. In this case, figures, statistics, historical documents, and works of other authors are used. All information is processed and presented in an understandable format, allowing you to understand the evidence base and study information about each country.
This source is related to other articles, revealing the reasons for low economic opportunities. The paper supports the rest of the sources by identifying common factors contributing to unemployment. The answer to the research question can be obtained by statistics on the decline in economic development that accompanies a decrease in employment.
