One should be aware that writing with the purpose of entertainment instead of informing has several advantages and disadvantages. The major benefit of such an approach is the presence of an opportunity to introduce humor and comedy. By having an additional objective of making people laugh, an author receives more freedom to exaggerate the facts and use simpler and more common terms to describe complex matters. In addition, entertainment is a more engaging and interesting way to discuss or address certain issues in comparison to a mere informing approach. For example, shows such as Comedy Central or Last Week Tonight with John Oliver strive of using entertainment as a tool to express their opinions and results of their analysis.
However, it is important to note that there are also several ramifications of writing with the purpose of entertainment. Some highly sensitive or controversial issues should not be addressed with the given goal in mind because it can spark a severe wave of outrage. For example, the problems of racism or discriminating disability should not be written entertainingly because the groups and associated events can be highly sensitive. Similarly, some religions, such as Islam, have a low level of tolerance for mockery and humor in regards to their values and beliefs. In other words, writing a piece on Islam and its prophet with the purpose of entertainment can endanger the writer’s life due to the prevalence of radical extremists. In addition, it is highly difficult to remain respectable and neutral when using the stated approach, because any form of entertainment will inevitably make vague and simplistic points with some form of opinionated statements.
