Amazon Relational Database Service is a web service that helps users create, run, and scale relational databases in the cloud (Soni & Soni, 2021). It features variable capacity for various standard relational databases and handles many standard database management tasks. Hence, it is essential to analyze the information about Amazon RDS and establish the advantages and drawbacks of adopting Amazon’s Relational Database Service.

Amazon RDS is a Software as a Service (SaaS) that provides a full-featured relational database service similar to MySQL and Oracle and is completely hosted on Amazon’s infrastructure. Designed to work with all AWS cloud products, Amazon RDS is based on a conventional cloud utility computing model where users are charged only for the number of RDS hours used. Moreover, by providing access to the functionality of well-known Oracle or MySQL databases, Amazon RDS provides compatibility with many applications and tools familiar to developers (Soni & Soni, 2021). Furthermore, Amazon RDS also helps users to scale database storage capacity and processing resources to accommodate customer needs.

In general, the database administrator can create, configure, manage and delete an Amazon RDS instance, which is a cloud database environment, as well as the compute and storage resources it uses. The administrator can activate multiple databases or schemas, depending on the database engine chosen. Amazon RDS limits the number of database instances per customer to 40 per account. AWS imposes additional restrictions on Oracle and SQL Server instances to the extent that a user can have no more than 10 instances of each (Soni & Soni, 2021). Thus, Amazon RDS supports various database mechanisms for storing and organizing data and it assists with database management tasks such as migration, backup, recovery, and patching.

Advantage and Limitation

The transition to the Amazon relational database has many advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. The benefits include the fact that Amazon RDS supports six comparable databases. For example, Amazon Aurora is a compatible and cost-effective MySQL and PostgreSQL relational database designed in the cloud to monitor the performance and availability of traditional databases and is cost-effective (Soni & Soni, 2021).

Additionally, Amazon RDS for Oracle optimizes Oracle cloud installation and provides provisioning, backup, software patching, monitoring and hardware scaling. The advantages also include the creation of web and mobile applications. High availability, bandwidth and scalability of storage allow applications to expand (Soni & Soni, 2021). Moreover, Amazon RDS enables frequent scaling of database computing power and storage in minutes with no downtime. It is possible to expand the RAM from 32vCPU to 244 GB (Soni & Soni, 2021). Meanwhile, Amazon RDS enables to increase storage scalability as storage requirements grow.

In addition, deploying Amazon RDS service to multiple availability zones increases availability and reliability of database instances, which enables it to efficiently handle workloads on operational databases (Soni & Soni, 2021).

When a database instance is allocated for use in multiple availability zones, Amazon RDS synchronously replicates data to a backup instance located in another availability zone. Another advantage is that using Amazon RDS enables enterprises to encrypt their databases for better security and authenticate access using Amazon keys. In addition, it is highly convenient to create replication servers using RDS. It is worth noting that there are some minor drawbacks to using Amazon RDS. Firstly, it is limited access, and users can use RDS services (Soni & Soni, 2021). Amazon restricts access to any instance or database shell. Secondly, it is the lack of complete root support. There are no superusers in RDS databases, and full root privileges are not provided.

Therefore, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) provides a simple way to configure, use and scale relational databases in the cloud. The service provides economical and scalable use of resources while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database configuration, patching and backup. This allows to focus on applications to ensure high performance, high availability, security and compatibility.

Amazon RDS provides a full-function MySQL database, applications and utilities for working with existing MySQL databases will work without changes. Also, the service automatically handles common administration tasks such as installation, upgrades and backups. It is noteworthy that in the future, developers plan to eliminate flaws that occur when using Amazon RDS. At the same time, a large-scale transition to RDS and gradual improvement of existing features is planned.
