The US political system consists of liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans. The chosen news article elaborates more on the Federal Abortion ban from these two perspectives. The Democratic Party of the USA supports the legality of abortions, while the Republican Party of the USA supports their ban. According to the statistics, “Republicans are more extreme on abortion than Democrats by a 51 to 32 percent margin,” which is not surprising (Harsanyi, 2022). The conflict between the two sides arose when Lindsey Graham presented the “Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act,” which prohibits females from having abortions past 15 weeks of pregnancy. The article’s author thinks derisively about how Republicans cannot defend their thoughts. However, he also thinks condemningly of Democrats who disagree with any restriction on abortion, even if it allows women have abortions for urgent health issues. Moreover, the external information presented in the text must prove that the Republican proposal is more permissive regarding abortion time than in European countries. Despite such comparative figures, Democrats are even against protecting children who survived an abortion. This is surprising because such programs do not restrict abortion but only help to cope with the consequences. The author concludes his thoughts by saying that the level of commitment to his ideals is off the scale for Democrats since they can not provide any coherent or moral argument for opposing the bill by Republicans. Thus, Democrats are no longer protecting females’ choices; they advocate for having abortions.
The abortion acts that the US government currently implements directly affect the Constitution and civic engagement. The abortion ban did not break only political parties into two; the public also shares different attitudes. In response to the Republicans’ decisions, several collective actions prove people’s political involvement due to their concern with abortion. Actions taking place in many US states can be considered civic engagement as they prove political activism benefits society. Harsanyi (2022) illustrates it through the voting procedure, where many citizens support the post-first trimester ban rather than oppose it. Voting ensures the public’s choices in governmental decisions and facilitates the democracy of the country. Furthermore, the bill presented by Democrats violates the First Amendment to Constitution, guaranteeing freedom of religion, speech, petitions, and assembly. The reason is that “The Stop Anti-Abortion Discrimination Act” persecutes pregnancy centers caring for women’s mental health (Harsanyi, 2022). Since the Democrats disagree with the winning Republicans, they introduce this bull that penalizes the necessary health centers for half of their revenue. However, it is unfair and contradicts the amendments made to the Constitution. Despite all the efforts the Democrats could put into making amendments to the Constitution regarding human life from the moment of conception, it is impossible. The reason is that amending the Constitution is a highly challenging and rare case in the country’s policy.
The “Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act” is a necessary political decision that does not violate human rights. The reason is that the Act proposed by Lindsey Graham even considers exceptions by allowing females who experienced rape and incest to interrupt pregnancy. My main argument is related to health considerations. After an abortion, women should have a chance to continue a healthy routine without any detrimental consequences. If a woman interrupts her pregnancy too late, she risks her health and life. Although I believe the government should limit abortions, I do not support Republicans or Democrats. First, Ethics is not the most critical moment in limiting abortions as Republicans suppose. No political party should dictate moral conduct when people have differing views towards the dilemma. Everyone should have a choice based on their moral or religious beliefs. Moreover, Democrats limited the abortion period to 15 weeks, while it could be several weeks longer without harming women. That is why it indeed takes pro-life choices from females and discriminates against their values and rights. When it comes to Democrats, they are too committed to their abortion ban that they overlook critical human factors such as well-being. I could support Democrats who oppose any restrictions on abortions if they did not contradict health considerations. Furthermore, some of their beliefs contradict my moral values as I think the child who survived an abortion should not be tortured again. In contrast, Democrats persecute every unwanted child and want to force women to get rid of any restrictions on abortion, even if it ends sadly for the whole world.
