Confidentiality Challenges in Social Field Education Experience

Effective communication is the cornerstone of social work, and it must be maintained throughout the practice. At the same time, it is related to another crucial concept, which is present in the field. Confidentiality is a vital principle to which responsible social workers adhere without any exceptions. It serves as the driving force of all activities in this sphere, enabling trust and substantial progress. Accordingly, improper handling of confidentiality-related matters leads to negative implications, and maintaining it is a challenging task in the modern environment. It is important to analyze the contemporary policies in the field of social work confidentiality in order to ensure effective communication between practitioners and their clients.

The process of open-line communication is embedded in the nature of quality social work. Overall, an effective practitioner’s duty is to engage all potential means when helping their client. However, it is important to understand the distinction between open communication and confidential information (Laureate Education, 2013). In addition, Garthwait (2017) states that some clients engage in social work involuntarily, thus causing additional challenges for effective communication.

In order to obtain the required information, social workers have to use other sources, which may entail a confidentiality breach. According to Wulff et al. (2011), this principle is crucial for any committed practitioner, which is why it is indispensable to ensure one’s compliance with it. Therefore, students must be taught to maintain proper distance in relationships with their future clients. Nevertheless, there exist significant barriers, such as a client’s unwillingness to cooperate and the lack of social worker’s expertise.

In order to respond to potential challenges, modern organizations devise specific policies in regard to confidentiality. For example, the Hubb Foundation (2019) undertakes to treat with utmost respect any information shared with their staff by vulnerable adults. The responsibility for the execution of this policy is placed upon the organization’s employees. The Data Protection Policy concerns any information received by the Foundation, which may be deemed sensitive and cannot be disclosed without the patient’s prior consent. The purpose of the policy is to ensure that the data can only be accessed by those who work toward ensuring the well-being of clients. This way, the patients are expected to trust the social workers and be more open with them.

On the other hand, some situations, which arise in the line of social work, pose additional challenges in regard to confidential data protection. Saxon et al. (2006) state that particular factors may push practitioners toward breaching confidentiality. The list usually comprises the situations in which the disclosure is necessary to ensure the patient’s safety and well-being. Wulff et al. (2011) write that social workers may find it necessary to discuss some delicate matter with one’s relatives for the sake of the patient’s security.

As a matter of fact, the policy of Hubb Foundation (2019) considers such situations, providing a comprehensive list of circumstances in which it is possible to breach confidentiality. For example, its workers are allowed to divulge information about serious abuse if a lack of action will make the client remain in the abusive environment. However, it appears impossible to be prepared for any development in today’s complex environment. Therefore, all organizations must show a certain level of flexibility and preparedness to analyze each case in an individual manner.

In conclusion, client confidentiality remains a central concept of social work, as it enables trust and mutual understanding. While effective communication is crucial in attaining therapy goals, social workers must be aware of certain boundaries beyond which confidentiality breaches may occur. Sensitive data protection is important, and this information must only be disclosed in specific cases fixed in an organization’s policy. However, unusual circumstances may arise, posing ethical dilemmas for social workers. Accordingly, professional agility and expertise remain pivotal qualities.
