Introduction

Oram et al. (2013) believe that the incidence of domestic violence and abuse can be associated with victimization among patients with psychiatric disorders. It is also important to consider the nature of a disorder since conditions including anxiety and depression, as well as post-traumatic disorder and some eating disorders, can be linked to the prevalence of domestic violence and emotional abuse.

Main body

Oram et al. (2013) support the idea that the incidence of domestic violence among psychiatric patients needs more attention in terms of reviewing “he prevalence (adult lifetime and past year) of being a victim of domestic violence among male and female psychiatric patients, and second, the risk of domestic violence among male and female psychiatric patients compared with controls” (p. 95).

The authors come to the conclusion that there is a positive correlation between the incidence of domestic violence experienced by patients with psychiatric disorders and the nature of their disorders. The results were different among the psychiatric population in relation to prevalence, severity, and sociological factors such as age and gender of the patients. However, it was also discovered that emotional abuse among psychiatric patients had a higher incidence than among other control groups.

Your reaction

Oram et al. brought to the public attention an important aspect of the studies concerned with domestic violence. It was reasonable to suggest that there could be a pattern underpinning the incidence of the cases of domestic violence, psychical and emotional abuse among the psychiatric patients. In addition, Oram et al. show an unbiased study that included various control groups that differ in terms of the nature of their disorders, sociological factors, severity, or prevalence of domestic violence. Oram et al. provided sufficient evidence supporting the conclusion that the incidence of domestic violence as a form of emotional abuse is higher among the patients with psychiatric disorders than other control groups. However, it is also important to admit that there was scarce information on non-partner domestic violence. For that reason, the authors are right to suggest that the specifics of the prevalence requires further research in relation to increasing the understanding of determinants of domestic violence and its effects in the frameworks of different psychiatric disorders.

The peer-review cycle functions successfully due to the consistency and regularity of its points. The most crucial initial benchmarks of the peer review cycle include the idea for the research or study, review of the literature concerned with the problems, and identification of a more specific problem, and funding a grant that can be used for funding the research. It is followed by such important points of the peer review cycle as the research itself and interpretation of data collected. After that, the research is presented at the conferences and criticized. The next most substantial points are to write a manuscript, to submit it, and to get it peer-reviewed. After those steps, it can be published and inspire another idea. The cycle works not in the same way as editing because of a number of factors. Of course, firstly, unlike an editorial review, the peer review helps to involve more scholars in the discussion of the studied problem. And, secondly, it can even inspire some ideas in the process that can reload the peer review cycle again. Finally, peers can suggest revising the article, but it is an editor’s final decision whether to publish it.

The article “Prevalence of experiences of domestic violence among psychiatric patients: systematic review” by Oram et al. (2013) was peer-reviewed since, firstly, the information represented with the sound methodology. Secondly, it was published in a prestigious journal that requires articles to be blind peer-reviewed and to involve a substantial sample and sound evidence. Peer-reviewed information often depends on the status of the journal, therefore, when using libraries and online resources, it is important to make sure that publication was published in a journal that is highly regarded in the scientific world.
