Emergency Management Role in Law Enforcement Career

The course of emergency management is highly important in the careers of the field of law enforcement. Emergency management and law enforcement are integrated, as skills used in one area of knowledge are helpful in the other. This essay will describe how the course of emergency management and the skill learned through the course could help me in my career in law enforcement.

Emergency management courses are essential to a wide variety of professions. They both tactically and strategically prepare the individuals to understand and respond to the main points of emergency management. Furthermore, as the variety of different threats to society keeps expanding in modern society, anyone should understand the basic terms of emergency management. The general skills acquired through the course are critical and analytical thinking, knowledge of techniques used in emergency management, and the ability to work and think productively in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment.

Critical and analytical thinking helps me be confident in my decisions in cases where no directions are given. As in urgent situations, decentralized decisions could help avoid tragic aftermath, so police officers need to be capable of decision-making in any circumstances, including the cases that that training did not cover. In addition to decision-making capabilities, police officers fixed to geographical areas in the city could establish trusting relationships with the citizens who could help in emergencies. As law enforcement teams are the first to arrive at the location of the emergency, they are the ones that should be able to react according to the circumstances, so the skill of being able to quickly analyze the situation and apply instructions to the case is essential. Next, the other useful skills learned through the course include the ability to plan and coordinate actions.

The law enforcement teams are frequently disregarded in natural disasters or terror attacks, where the attention is mainly focused on other types of first respond workers such as firefighters and medical staff. However, according to Murphy (2019), officers are a big part of pre-and post-disaster work as law enforcement teams are there to warn the community, evacuate the citizens, and provide mitigation activities. Due to the fact that the help from the law enforcement teams may require engaging with citizens in the context of leading them to a certain position, a skill of leadership would be useful. Leadership and the ability to impact other individuals’ behavior are also a part of the emergency management course, during which I learned how to form my opinion and influence others.

In my opinion, all sorts of emergencies may occur even in the career of a regular person. In order to advance in any aspiring career and become a successful professional, a person should be capable of making their own decisions after thoroughly analyzing the situation. In addition, the person should organize their responsibilities on time and be a part of a team willing to take the lead in case of emergency. Again, like any other high-skilled professional, a law enforcement representative needs to carry the same qualities and skills and apply them in an unexpected situation without pressure or stress. Lastly, looking deeply at the question emphasizes that, in general, the course of emergency management is what differentiates regular law enforcement from the high-skilled professionals capable of quick advancement in their careers.

In conclusion, I aspire to become a high-skilled professional in the future and stand by the fact that emergency management skills are part of the core of a successful career. A wide variety of professional fields and law enforcement could apply critical thinking, fast decision-making, and knowledge of the strategies of emergency management. A person could only be calm and not give in to the stress in an emergency if he knows that he is an effective problem solver and has all the knowledge needed to apply it to the situation.
