Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education

Caregivers with baccalaureate degrees can provide quality care to their patients. A BSN nursing program transforms learners into professional nurses. The program should produce nurses who can make a lasting impact in healthcare. A good nursing program embraces various humanities and sciences in order to produce competent nurses. Such nurses will revolutionize every healthcare system. Some “humanities and sciences are prerequisites towards better nursing programs” (Iwasiw, Andrusyszyn, & Goldenberg, 2008, p. 46). Such humanities and sciences are necessary because they prepare learners to become competent in various fields. The practice is appropriate towards addressing the changing needs of many patients.

Sciences and humanities form the foundations of nursing practice. These fields focus on the areas affecting human beings and their biochemical processes. Certain sciences and humanities pre-requisites should be in place for every BSN nursing program. The first scientific field is biology. Biology examines the mechanisms of every living organism. This scientific field “explores different biological functions such as reproduction, movement, death, and growth” (Oermann & Gaberson, 2013, p. 43). The field helps people understand how different organisms multiply and spread diseases. The field is critical towards understanding the health issues and complications affecting many people in the society.

The other important scientific field is chemistry. This field focuses on “the composition, change, structure, and properties of matter” (Billings & Halstead, 2011, p. 50). The field helps learners understand how materials react with one another. The field also highlights the behaviors of certain physical compounds whenever exposed to different situations. Science is an interesting field because it helps people understand everything about their surrounding world. The study field is relevant towards supporting the professional and academic goals of nurses. The above description explains why such sciences should be in place for a BSN nursing program.

Humanities are relevant disciplines because they analyze human behaviors and cultural practices (Billings & Halstead, 2011). Some humanities equip learners with the best information in order to become competent nurses. The first relevant humanity is history. History encourages human beings to analyze the past in order to present the best solutions to every challenge encountered in the universe. The other meaningful humanity is law. The field helps learners understand what the society expects them to do. Many legal procedures and practices have developed within the past centuries. The humanity helps nurses understand their mandates, responsibilities, and powers. Such caregivers will be aware of the best legal practices in their professions.

Philosophy is a meaningful humanity because it encourages every person to embrace wisdom (Oermann & Gaberson, 2013). The humanity informs people about the truth. The field also supports the power of critical thinking. This humanity forms the best background for nurses and other professionals in medical practice. Philosophy encourages people to embrace wisdom in order to make accurate decisions. Philosophy also governs many practices including nursing. Communication studies examine how human beings interact verbally or non-verbally as social beings. Such communication patterns determine the nature and success of human interactions. The humanity is necessary because it will equip nurses with the best nursing skills. The other important humanity is cultural study. Humanists use social backgrounds and cultural structures to define human beings.

Understanding most of the above structures can improve the nature and effectiveness of human interaction and participation. These sciences and humanities pre-requisites are necessary for a BSN nursing program. These fields widen the learners’ skills and knowledge. The fields ensure every learner has a strong theoretical foundation for the BSN nursing program. According to Keating (2010, p. 39), “a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and humanities will ensure every caregiver is competent”. Such skills and ideas will make the learning process more interesting and rewarding.
