Evaluation of Corporate Codes of Conduct: Meta vs Amazon

Introduction

For this critical review, the six codes of conduct adopted by well-known and influential companies were closely evaluated. Each of them outlines the core values and practices that a company’s leadership strives to promote as a part of its corporate culture. Yet, some approaches are more effective in motivating employees to act ethically than others. As criteria for evaluation, I focused on the depth and comprehensiveness of each code’s development, and I compiled the following list, starting with the most effective: Meta, Wells Fargo, Starbucks, Google, Tesla, and Amazon. The four companies in the middle of the list either have no letter from the CEO or provide a less detailed framework for everyday decision-making.

The Most Effective Code of Conduct

I selected Meta’s code of conduct as the most effective because it provides a comprehensive explanation of how employees should behave and clearly states the reasons. The code of conduct opens with a message from CEO Mark Zuckerberg that outlines the company’s vision and mission, helping employees understand their purpose. He states, “The Importance of our work means we must all commit to holding ourselves to a high standard” (“Code of business conduct,” n.d.).

In this way, employees are explicitly told what is expected of them. Furthermore, the text is divided into clear sections, each governing a particular aspect of the work. All terms and practices, from interpersonal relations among employees within a company to confidentiality and privacy considerations, are explained in depth.

The Least Effective Code of Conduct

I regard Amazon’s code as the least effective of all, as it does not explicitly communicate company values and provides no detailed guidelines. Although Amazon outlines expectations for employees, it fails to explain precisely how they should behave in different situations. For instance, the company states that it “will not tolerate any illegal discrimination or harassment of any kind” (“The Code of Conduct”). However, there is no further explanation of what it means for day-to-day practices.

The rest of the code sections are developed in the same way, which fails to provide a comprehensive framework for teaching and motivating employees. In addition, Amazon’s code of conduct lacks a letter from the CEO. Such an appeal to workers could show that the leadership team realizes its commitments and is ready to comply with all rules and promote values.

As a leading and constantly growing company, Amazon strives to achieve excellence in everything we do. We are inspired by striving for the best conduct, by applying efforts to create the best corporate culture, and by showing integrity in our day-to-day practices. Any personal gain is less important than a company’s reputation. Its name united the best people who are motivated to work towards the general well-being. We will continue building trust and appreciation among our partners and clients by doing everything we do ethically and honestly.

Conclusion

To sum up, a closer look at different codes of conduct showed that although they often mention similar values, some are more effective in promoting ethical conduct. One adopted by Meta is the most successful in this regard because it provides a profound explanation of what is expected from employees and how it can be achieved. On the other hand, Amazon is less effective because it provides less depth to the principles it communicates. A letter from the CEO would help better communicate a company’s values and give it a personal touch.
