The search formulated as Stress site: Nature.com provides links to numerous publications about stress on the website of the scholarly journal Nature. These publications mainly focus on either high levels of stress found in contemporary society or the neural mechanisms involved (“Stress,” 2020). The search reveals that stress occupies a prominent place in the minds of Nature’s contributors, and the entries on the subject are numerous.
The search formulated as DEFINE: Hippocampus reveals the explanation of the term. According to the search result, the hippocampus is a region of the brain mainly associated with memory, and its name means a “sea horse” in Greek, owing to the structure’s irregular shape (“Hippocampus,” 2020). The search result also reveals a significant increase in the use of the term from the 1960s onward.
The search for “affordable housing” in Google Newspapers provides a broad range of articles on the subject. There are dozens of search results, mainly from the 1980s to 2000s, with the majority belonging to the 1990s (“Affordable Housing,” 2020a). The same search in Google Books Ngram demonstrates slight increases in the 1920s and the mid-century and a spiking increase from the late 1980s through the 1990s (“Affordable Housing,” 2020b). Thus, the two searches corroborate each other.
Google interprets she search for this image as “Chief Cornplanter” (“Chief Cornplanter,” 2020). Upon closer inspection, it is possible to learn that it is a painting of John Abeel III, also known as Cornplanter, a Native American chief of missed Seneca-Dutch ancestry who lived in the late 18th – early 19th century.
While all these search capabilities may be useful in their own right, it varies from case to case. The search by image is a rather basic function, and an ordinary Google search may yield a suitable definition just as easily as the one with DEFINE function. However, Google Newspapers and Google Books Ngram are extremely useful in establishing the historical background and print coverage of any given issue.
