In my opinion, Ian Curtis’ words “No language, just sound, that’s all we need to know” do not correspond as much to the fact that the general public in the U.S. lacks the scientific knowledge, as they actually reveal the essence of author’s subconscious anxieties, related post-industrial living. At the same time, the semiotic context of this line does subtly imply that White people in Western countries are being slowly deprived of a spiritual quality, which allowed their ancestors to build and to maintain civilization – the ability to rely on their sense of rationale while facing existential challenges. Nowadays, this process has been brought to its logical conclusion, with citizens being indoctrinated to believe that the concept of rationality is “euro-centric” and therefore, necessarily “evil”. In this paper, we will aim at substantiating the earlier statement.
It does not take a historian to realize that, as recent as fifty years ago, the hobbies of male adolescents in Western countries differed significantly from the hobbies of today’s young men. Whereas, the overwhelming majority of young “baby-boomers” used to be technically minded (such activities as building rocket models, assembling amateur radios, and designing their own motorcycles were particularly popular among them), most young people that belong to Generation X (Ian Curtis), could not care less about technical pursuits, with the possible exception of perfecting their “sex techniques”. Nowadays, more and more young people indulge in different forms of social escapism, as their way of dealing with what they perceive as “life problems”. In the case of representatives of racial minorities, such escapism sublimates in these people’s existential obsession with drugs. In the case of Whites, their social escapism usually adopts a form of “pursuit of spirituality”. It is not a pure coincidence that White people represent the overwhelming majority of today’s young neo-Liberals, who think that by drinking organic coffee at Starbucks, by having their ears, lips, noses, and genitals pierced, and by exploring different aspects of “New Age” philosophy, they really benefit “mother Earth”. In its turn, such behavioral traits among the youth directly relate to the fact that today, more and more young people choose in favor of pursuing sophisticatedly sounding, but socially valueless careers of “public relations managers”, “experts on racial relations”, “sex councilors” and “fashion designers”, as opposed to the careers associated with hard science – engineers, technicians, computer software designers, physicians, and chemists. In its turn, such a situation is nothing but a result of the “celebration of diversity” policy being brought into the academic curriculum. Today, many American high schools and even colleges have been turned into the “kindergartens for adolescents”, where students are being encouraged to do just about anything, except for gain excellence in their studies. In order to maintain an illusion of “intellectual equality” among people that belong to different ethnicities, the crazed hawks of political correctness have institutionalized the policies of reversed racism (“affirmative action”) in America’s academia. The results became instantly apparent – America’s large corporate employers, such as Microsoft Corporation, now prefer hiring professionals from abroad, as opposed to the graduates of American universities and colleges.
Thus, we can say that Ian Curtis’ words can serve as the proof that the existential mode of people in Western countries becomes increasingly marginalized, which results in such people beginning to think that possession of well-developed linguistic skills, on their part, is no longer necessary, simply because such skills only come in handy within a context of an individual striving to verbally express the meaning of highly abstract concepts. Ian n its turn, individual’s ability to operate with such concepts requires his or her rate of IQ to be no lesser than 100. However, citizens in Western countries are now being made to believe that it is namely their highly irrational emotions, their “feelings”, which represent an ontological value, and not the actual rate of their IQ, as it used to be the case, before the national integrity of Western countries started to be undermined by neo-Liberal cronies, put in the position of power. Apparently, Curtis has realized that people do not need to utilize their verbal skills, in order to express the semantic essence of their animalistic urges to others, while practicing the New Age doctrine of “simple living”. All they need to do, within a context of communicating with the other members of the community, is to adjust their facial expressions to a particular urge they are experiencing at the time, or to simply yell out loud, as monkeys do – “No language, just sound, that’s all we need to know”. Such Curtis’ idea simply indicates the fact that, while being subjected to the propaganda of equality, tolerance, multiculturalism, and cultural relativism, he became spiritually corrupted beyond the point of redemption.
By the time European explorers had set their foot in Africa for the first time, they realized that Natives’ vocabulary only amounted to 50-100 words, at best. Yet, somehow, these people managed to survive, over the course of millennia, even though that their activities were limited to indulging in never-ending tribal warfare and cannibalizing each other. Given the fact that degenerate Liberals like Curtis associate the traditional lifestyle of Black Africans with “environmental spirituality” and “closeness to earth”, which they never get tired of praising, it comes as no surprise that in “Transmission”, the author was actually striving to undermine the very principles of rational living, upon which Western civilization is based: “Staying in the same place, just staying out the time (Blacks had no written history, before the arrival of Europeans) … No language, just sound, that’s all we need know, to synchronize love to the beat of the show”. White people like Curtis, have simply forgotten that it is up to them to spread the light of progress throughout the world, simply because the representatives of other races have proven themselves utterly incapable of doing it. Yet, instead, White “lefties” act contrary to their biological destination – they praise anti-intellectualism as something that has value in itself while trying to get rid of their “historical guilt” over being born White. They clearly prefer “spirituality” to science, which nevertheless, does not prevent them from taking practical advantage of a variety of scientific innovations, solely associated with Western civilization. The same existential trends were observed among White Romans, in the time of the Roman Empire’s decline. The degenerate Romans in 5th century A.D., preoccupied with “celebration of diversity”, were simply incapable of paying attention to the news of social or political importance, unless they sensed that such news somehow related to entertainment. They were becoming increasingly intrigued by philosophic doctrines that sounded “exotic” enough, such as Christianity, and the most important – at that time, denying the concept of linguistic finesse and the principle of rationality, in general, became the “statement of good taste” among those Roman patricians who considered themselves as being particularly sophisticate. We all know what happened to Rome, as result – it was being sacked by barbarians, who despite their lack of cultural refinement possessed plenty of biological vitality. Nowadays, there are many objective reasons to suggest that America (and the whole Western world, in general) is simply following the footsteps of spiritually corrupted Romans (the barbarians from Third World are colonizing Western countries, as we speak), simply because the existence of more and more White people is being affected by what Sigmund Freud used to refer to as the “instinct of death” – they ceased to be masters in their own countries. Therefore, Ian Curtis’ lyrics cannot be discussed as anything but the ultimate proof of the author’s existential decadence. These lyrics substantiate the points made earlier in this paper, better than anything else does.
