The meaning of life is the most crucial and essential question for every human being because it addresses the deep inner self. It arises from a human’s fundamental desire, which he wants to fulfill. Everyone tries to satisfy this desire in different ways, but there is only one for all answer to the question: “we want to be happy” (The Augustine Institute, 6:33). However, nothing in this world can fill this hole in the soul; we always continue to seek something. I believe that we are all seeking God in one way or another.
God is a representation for us of something immortal, perfect, full. If we think about these words, we can recognize that they do not describe human beings. Thus, it is a natural desire to overcome our limited nature, which causes all of our sufferings. Existential, physical, mental sufferings – all of them also have a single cause that is concluded in our limitedness. Then it is a logical consequence that only something infinite can satisfy our deepest aspirations and bring happiness to us. Augustine said in his Confessions that “our heart is restless until it rests in you,” addressing the Lord (Augustine, para. 1). God is the single aim of all people, whether they recognize it or not, because only in God can they find happiness.
In search of the meaning of life, it is essential to seek it in domains where we have talent. Everyone has different predispositions, and he must note it because by defining what he can do the best, he can find the business that brings joy faster. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences takes into account this moment because it states that “everyone has all eight bits of intelligence at varying degrees of proficiency” (Marenus, para. 39). A human will probably get immense joy from what he does better than other things. That is why it is crucial to know the most appropriate way to search for one’s meaning in life.
To conclude, all people seek the meaning of life because they cannot live happily without it. However, many of them try to seek it in things that the world can give them, in things that only confirm their overwhelming limitedness, even although people use their potential in the right way. There is only one “thing” worth our search, and it is God, beyond all limits.
