Introduction
This study aims at identifying and systematizing data on the potential impact of any existing legal and technological approaches to improving safety management systems (SMS) in aviation. Determining the relationship between the proposed approaches and SMS in aviation will allow identifying the optimal drivers that influence security parameters. In order to achieve this, it is of essence to ensure that the variables and hypothesis, data analysis techniques, and the appropriateness of statistical tests are done appropriately.
Variables and Hypotheses
The study will consist of the independent, dependent, and mediating variables. The dependent variable in this research is the number of officially documented accident rates in the aviation industry as it is affected by other variables to produce change. On the other hand, the study’s independent variable is the types of existing technological advancements. Categories of legal regulations will act as the mediating variables. The following are the hypotheses of the study:
- H1: There is a correlation existing between the proposed approaches to the field of aviation and SMS performance.
- H2: There is a difference existing in the impact of any legal and technological approaches towards improving safety management systems (SMS) in aviation.
Data Analysis Techniques
To test the hypotheses formulated above, the most appropriate statistical technique to be utilized is the Chi-Square test for association. The Chi-Square will be used to check for the association that could be in existence between the categories of methods of legal regulations and the methods of applying technological advancements. The test will check on any significance in the association between the two variables.
The second test to be carried out will be a one-way Anova. The one-way ANOVA will be used to test the significance of the difference in the SMS performance based on the approaches utilized in the study. This will be key to the identification of the best legal and technological approaches that can be utilized in the safety management systems (SMS) thus, being able to know the most appropriate model. Further, the data will be analyzed by the utilization of the bivariate correlation technique. This will be carried out on the variables of the approaches and the extent of utilization and the SMS performance.
Appropriateness of the Statistical Tests
The first test of the Chi-Square test of association is found to be fit and applicable in this study because the variables involved are measured on a nominal scale. Thus, to test any statistical significance or association, the test is the most appropriate since it would indicate if there is an association between the methods of legal regulations and the procedures of applying technological advancements. Further, the second test of the one-way Anova is applicable in this study, and the variables of the approaches utilized are measured on a nominal scale. In contrast, the variable of SMS performance is measured on the ordinal scale. To check on the difference and obtain the best approaches among the categories and the methods of the technological and the legal approaches, the one-way Anova test is much more appropriate. Additionally, the third statistical test of a bivariate correlation in the study is appropriate to measure the extent to which the approaches are utilized and the performance of SMS. Thus, since both variables will be on scale, then the bivariate correlation test will be appropriate and fit to be used in this test.
