Leadership in Drug Abuse Program Development

Introduction

For a program to be developed successfully, strong leadership is required. The process of designing and planning programs is a comprehensive endeavor that calls for an awareness of an organization’s core principles and cultural norms. Communication, human relations, and communication are all examples of leadership duties required during the program development process. Within the context of a potential intervention for drug abuse, the roles and competencies of leaders are the primary emphasis of this article.

Proposed Program

Garden Heights Recovery is a group operating within Jersey City’s boundaries (About Garden Heights recovery, 2020). Outpatient treatment for those recovering from substance abuse is one of the services provided by the organization. Individuals who have previously received inpatient care and are now in need of outpatient services are the target audience for these programs. The Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program is one of the most important offerings provided by Garden Heights Recovery. People who have completed inpatient care and rehabilitation services and are well on their way to recovery are eligible for participation in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The objective is to facilitate a smooth transition into sobriety. One-on-one counseling, training in life skills, behavioral counseling, and community support in the form of fund programs, food assistance, and other similar services are some of the services offered. Group therapy counseling is another service (About Garden Heights recovery, 2020). The idea for this new program is to include a new service into the IOP that is already in place. The individual will be able to learn new skills and participate in activities that will help them start their business with the aid of the suggested program. The primary objective of the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is to provide participants with the skills necessary to live self-sufficiently, return to school or look for work, have an established home with employment, and achieve several other goals.

The program that is being proposed is to add a service that will assist individuals, particularly adolescents and young adults, in making use of their talents and abilities, such as being the best at music, art, football, or playing other sports. Examples of these activities include baking and participating in other sports. The participation of teenagers and younger people in the program will benefit from the addition of the service because it will assist showcase their skills (About Garden Heights recovery, 2020). They will have a lower risk of relapsing into drug use if they are occupied and involved in developing their abilities. The provision of this service will remove the presence of the conditions that contributed to their drug usage.

The suggested program is comparable to intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) provided by various care facilities across the United States, such as the Alvarado Parkway Institute, the Ascension Seton Behavioral Healthcare, and the American Addiction Centers. The intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) at these treatment facilities emphasize drug misuse and teach recovering addicts how to function effectively in everyday life once they have completed inpatient treatment (About Garden Heights recovery, 2020). In addition to assisting the children and adolescents in avoiding relapse, the organizations make certain that those who are students continue their studies and graduate from the program.

Leadership Skills and Roles

The management of people is the first leadership responsibility and skill required for this program. To complete the program, the leaders need to link along the positions. The program will make use of the understanding and potential possessed by humans. The group responsible for offering IOP needs to have discussions and make choices about the best ways to provide development of talents to the people participating in the program (Kettner et al., 2016). Adopting a new program within an organization requires a commitment from the highest-level managers down to entry-level personnel, who should use data to assist customers.

Communication is necessary for this scenario, as the inclusion of this service necessitates the establishment of relationships between the organization and other entities, such as NIDA and SAMHSA. Additionally, this service necessitates the inclusion of this service. Communication helps to facilitate the relationships between the organizations and enhances teamwork to fulfill the objectives that have been specified. Communication is also helpful in determining the requirements of the involved individuals and relying on the message sent to the people (Kettner et al., 2016). In addition, there is a requirement for working together with people who teach life skills, coaches, and talent managers.

Thirdly, participatory decision-making is also a necessary ability because the implementation of the program requires the involvement of a large number of partners in addition to communication with the individuals who are expected to benefit from the program. Participatory decision-making helps to reduce the likelihood of disagreements and accusations, such as those that arise from the exclusion of certain decisions made by relevant groups. In the fourth place, there is a requirement to have the ability to resolve conflicts. Concerning social initiatives, such as funding and resource distribution, disagreements are certain to emerge at some point.

Leadership Skills that will help Address Organizational Values and Culture

The organization’s culture and principles demand the services provided to all those in need with no discrimination, and the leadership skills and duties align with these values. The roles help to clarify what aspects of the program are working and which are not. In clearly defined leadership roles and skills, there is an accurate description of the problem and the service that must be provided to satisfy the individuals’ aims and demands (Ahmadabadi, 2018). Following the consultation process, the program’s management will undertake evaluations and make data-driven decisions on its efficacy.

Leadership Roles and Skills Impact the Program Planning, Design, and Development

Planning, designing, and developing a program are all affected by leadership positions and skills. The program’s effectiveness depends on the efforts of those in authority, who will coordinate the program’s goals and assemble the necessary human and community resources (Kettner et al., 2016). The leaders will determine the resources, actions, outcomes, and impact of the program assessment through their skills and roles. The IOP will be implemented after the leaders have gathered the necessary data and information. Inpatient to outpatient transition is the goal of an IOP. In many IOPs, using sport to prevent relapse has become an essential tactic (Ahmadabadi, 2018). The program’s implementation will be aided by human relations, communication skills, and roles.

In addition, the roles will help design the program, such as making it feasible to communicate with the people engaged. The roles ensure the program’s success during and after its execution. (Kettner et al., 2016). Human service programs must now be efficient and successful to remain relevant. The responsibilities will ensure the program’s successful implementation (Kettner et al., 2016). Talking with clients about what they need and the way many resources to allocate will assist minimize misunderstandings.

Conclusion

Strong leadership is necessary for the successful development of a program. Within the city limits of Jersey City, there is a group known as Garden Heights Recovery. Garden Heights Recovery’s Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program is a critical service. The goal is to make the transition to sobriety as easy as possible. A leader’s first duty and talent in this program is managing people. The company’s culture and ideals necessitate that services be provided to everyone in need without exception, and the leadership’s abilities and responsibilities reflect these beliefs.
