Few male teachers are teaching in the majority of schools around the world. This is an indication that the teaching profession is more feminized. Research shows that male teachers account for only 25% of all the teachers. This is likely to impact negatively on the performance of boys in schools. As a result, many calls are being made to increase the number of male teachers in different schools. To boost this campaign, many adverts on teacher recruitment are directed towards employing male teachers only. This is done as an effort to reduce the gap between the number of male and female teachers in elementary schools. For example, in South Carolina, all the new adverts are focusing on the recruitment of male teachers.
As a sign of commitment, private individuals are offering donations to finance these adverts. However, there are other strategies that Kern County can employ to attract more male and minority groups into the teaching profession. For example, school administrators should hire men to fill in different positions like teaching assistants. Such positions require minimal qualifications and hence, it makes it easier for men to work in such positions. Later on, men can be asked to undertake further training so that they can be fully incorporated into the teaching profession. Recruiting more male teachers especially in large education programs will also make it easier for the children to accept men as their teachers. Besides, increasing the number of male teachers is an appropriate method of reducing the dominance of female teachers in the education sector. It is also a way of improving the academic performance of boys in schools. Thus, there is a great need for Kern County to increase the number of male teachers needed in classrooms.
