Personal Goals
Personal goals are the objectives that we set for ourselves in life. They are the goals we strive to achieve in the short or long term (Rao, 2020). These objectives can be divided into two broad categories: those related to our professional careers and personal lives (Rao, 2020).
In terms of individual objectives, I have three main goals that I strive to achieve. The first is to succeed as an entrepreneur. After graduating from college, I plan to launch my company and establish it as a market leader within two years. To achieve this, I plan to conduct in-depth market research, create a strong business plan, and accumulate the necessary experience to manage a successful venture.
Developing into a well-rounded person is my second objective in five years. I am studying psychology, philosophy, history, and literature to better understand the world around me. I also participate in physical activities like hiking, swimming, and reading to keep my mind and body in shape and support knowledge acquisition and overall physical and mental strength. By doing so, I want to become a more informed and knowledgeable person capable of making sound decisions.
My third goal is to become a leader in ten years, which I am working hard to accomplish. I want to influence others and help them achieve their goals positively through public speaking, volunteering, and team-building activities. In addition, I am taking leadership and management courses to help me develop my leadership skills, allowing me to mentor and guide others to success. With hard work and dedication, I will become a leader who can positively influence and assist others in achieving their goals.
SMART-B Goals Checklist
After discussing my personal goals, I will use the SMART-B goals checklist to determine whether my plans conform to best practices and identify areas for improvement.
Specific
My goals are specific in terms of what I want to attain and the steps I must take to get there. I have clearly defined targets for success and have broken down my goals into manageable chunks, such as launching my company within two years, developing into a well-rounded person in five years, and becoming a leader in ten years.
Measurable
I have determined indicators to track my progress in achieving my goals. For instance, I have set specific deadlines for completing certain tasks. I have also identified milestones for each goal, such as launching a website for my company and taking a certain number of classes each semester.
Achievable
My goals are possible because I have the necessary resources and capabilities to reach them. I have identified the needed help and am taking the required steps to acquire it, such as working with mentors, building a team, and pursuing education and certifications.
Resourced
I have identified the resources I need to reach my goals. I have put my time, money, and knowledge into achieving my goals. I am also tapping into my network to gain access to resources and support.
Time-Bound
I have set specific deadlines for myself to complete each task. I have also identified a timeline for achieving my overall goals, such as launching a website within six months, completing specific courses within a year, and becoming a leader within five years.
Benchmarked
I have identified benchmarks for low, average, and high performance, and I am tracking my performance regularly. I am also receiving regular feedback on my progress.
Summary
Given the checklist’s results, I must ensure that my goals are specific, measurable, achievable, resourced, time-bound, and benchmarked to create a SMART-B goal. I need to set clear numeric targets for success and identify metrics that can be used to measure progress. Additionally, I need to ensure that the resources necessary to reach my goals are available and that I set specific deadlines and benchmarks for performance.
