Preventive Psychotherapeutic Interventions: Beatrice Babee’s Approach

Introduction

Preventive psychotherapeutic interventions are meant to understand and take action against certain behavior in babies. This is considered vital due to the sensitiveness of the behavior which shows up in the relationship between mother and baby. It becomes necessary to tame this kind of behavior early so as to prevent future consequences. Beatrice Babee has been conducting this exercise in her own unique way. The aim of the paper is to take an analytical look at the way in which she approaches the whole aspect.

Psychotherapeutic Interventions

Preventive psychotherapeutic interventions are meant to understand and repair the relationship coexisting between mother and infant. Under normal circumstances various factors influence the relationship between the two. Beatrice Beebe has been engaged in this field with the aim of helping the mothers and infants to cope with the intrigues of relationship. Her approach towards the psychotherapeutic intervention is unique in many ways. This makes her work more significant in the field of mother infant relationship today. Bebee uses various psychological concepts to define the dynamics of relationship behavior and the motives behind them. At the same time she engages both the mother and the infant in exercise that not only reveals the inherent basics of relating but also assists both of them to appreciate and cope with the state of affairs. Babee assists especially mothers to understand the causes and effects of childcare that may lead to certain behavioral responses among their infants. In one of her case studies, babe is dealing with a mother whose infant does not sustain eye contact with her for a long time. As a result the mother was worried that maybe something might have gone wrong that led to this kind of situation. Babee handles this situation in a very unique way. First and foremost she tries to theoretically understand the reason behind the infant’s inability to sustain eye contact with the mother. However, unique in her way of approach is the practical aspect of her method. She makes the mother and infant to play as she watches from a distance so as to observe the behavior of both the mother and the infant during play. This is followed by a change of roles where the mother watches as the infant plays with Babee. At the end of the session Babee makes it known to the mother that the infant reacts due to over arousal. As such the mother is advised to cope with the infant so as to enable it overcome.

Babee’s preventive psychotherapeutic intervention method is of great significance to the mother infant relationship and the behavior inherent. In fact I consider it a milestone breakthrough in the whole field of preventive psychotherapeutic intervention. Through the procedures identified and used by Babee the behavior and response mechanism of the infant is identified. Through the same process the mother understands the reasons behind certain change of behavior and how to cope with it. In fact, Babee is very practical in her approach since she personally engages the infant so as to come up with conclusions based on her own experience.

Conclusion

Beatrice Babee has a unique way if approaching preventive psychotherapeutic intervention. Through her own method and approach she manages to tackle the major issues that affect mother infant relationships. This is evident from one of her case studies through which she engages both the mother and the infant in the process of understanding and coping with the behaviors. The paper has focused on Beatrice Babee’s approach to preventive psychotherapeutic interventions.
