Cisco’s dedication to sustainable and circular supply chains is an example to many other organizations that strive for excellence in this realm. While already engaged in high levels of digitalization within supply chains, Cisco has shifted its focus to social and environmental sustainability as key drivers of efficiency. The most important thing about the sustainability of Cisco’s supply chain is that the organization requires its suppliers to follow the highest standards of quality and ethical production. When suppliers adhere to such standards, Cisco can ensure that the products it manufactures are also up to par.

Advanced manufacturing integration into the supply chain of Cisco has enabled industrial data orchestration, which entails the extraction of data from assets to gain new insights on businesses, productivity improvement, and informed decision-making. Operating on a global scale, the supply chain at the organization integrates suppliers around the world subjected to high standards of sustainability. Recommendations for Supply Chain Improvement

Because of the fast pace of supply chain development, broadening globalization and changing customer expectations, supply chain managers experience high levels of pressure. There are several recommendations for supply chain managers that can be carried out in order to optimize operations and meet high standards that companies like Cisco have set for themselves. The first recommendation is to optimize company-owned inventory to ensure that there is no dead stock at their warehouses and they do not store more than needed because the costs of storing inventory are high. To optimize inventory, supply chain managers should engage in demand planning and forecasting.

It is recommended to improve distribution networks at an organization because there is no perfect system, and there is always room for improvement. For example, a holistic approach can be highly useful because it entails the review of essential components of the distribution network and focuses on understanding how every component works separately and in tandem with one another. Besides, it is suggested to build healthy supplier relationships to ensure high levels of trust and collaboration on an ongoing basis. When working with suppliers, organizations should set goals for continuing to reach value, measuring important performance metrics, and maintaining effective conflict resolution.

The final recommendation is to review procedures on a regular basis regardless of their weight in the supply chain process. Supply chain managers are expected to look at every procedure, whether it is the digitalization of the supply chain or logistics, and determine how they can be streamlined to mitigate the risks associated with their implementation. The process of review is expected to help identify various elements of risks and estimate their monetary influence. When there is knowledge of which procedures limit the high levels of performance in the long run. Therefore, it is always important that organizations understand their strengths and weaknesses in supply chain management to implement strategies that will increase their agility and effectiveness, which, in turn, will result in increased revenue and overall competitiveness.
